Recreational Therapist (RT) - Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist (CTRS)

Located in South Central Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly-structured psychiatric residential treatment facility for youth ages 10 to 22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Hughes Center also provides private, community-based educational services. We offer individualized and holistic care for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a nurturing, family-friendly environment. Our multidisciplinary team aims to provide comprehensive evaluations and evidence-based treatments to increase each youth's functional independence, addressing medical conditions and challenging behaviors associated with neurodevelopmental disorders. We encourage residents to adapt and apply learned skills in new environments to maintain their use in community settings.

The Hughes Educational Center operates day schools in Danville, South Boston, and Christiansburg, offering structured environments with low student-to-teacher ratios (4:1) and specialized programming focused on classroom ecology, individualized instruction, sensory integration, and parent collaboration, aiming to improve socialization and reduce maladaptive behaviors.

Position Description:

The Recreational Therapist develops, implements, and evaluates recreation therapy/treatment plans for residents at The Hughes Center, using specialized techniques to meet diverse needs. The role involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team for clinical decision-making and treatment planning.

  1. Develop individualized therapeutic strategies and document them within 10 days of admission.
  2. Conduct goal-oriented recreation therapy groups.
  3. Maintain progress notes compliant with standards (Virginia Medicaid, TriCare, etc.).
  4. Prepare discharge plans for each patient.
  5. Provide transportation and supervision for outings.
  6. Contribute to weekend, holiday, and vacation activity planning.
  7. Engage in professional growth activities.
  8. Be accessible and visible to staff during work hours.
  9. Support a quality resident Activity and Recreation Program.
  10. Communicate activities and events effectively.
  11. Support staff through activity education and demonstration.
  12. Supervise and care for adolescents in a residential setting.
  13. Provide positive interventions and guidance.
  14. Ensure accurate, effective documentation and follow resident treatment plans.
  15. Respond professionally and caring manner to children, maintaining boundaries.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy or related field.
  • Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS).
  • Minimum two years experience, preferably in a psychiatric setting with adolescents.
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Knowledge of recreational therapy programming.
Physical and Other Requirements:
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform full body motions as needed.
  • Support facility philosophy and goals.
  • Complete and pass Handle With Care & Verbal De-escalation training, First Aid, and CPR.
