Job summary

Psychiatric Medical Care, LLC is seeking an Inpatient Recreational Therapist to organize patient activities that stimulate cognition and social interaction on our inpatient behavioral health units.

You will train staff, fill in for program coverage, and help develop therapeutic activities. The role emphasizes care, community, and compliance with CMS guidelines in a supportive, team-based environment.

Qualifications

• Documented qualifications, licensing, and/or training specific to activities or therapeutic recreation is required.
• CTRS Certification is preferred.
• One year of experience in a patient activities program in a healthcare setting is preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Therapeutic Recreation or related field with related inpatient psychiatric experience preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills are preferred.
• Current CPR is provided.
• Handle with Care Training is provided.

Responsibilities

• Organize patient activities and contact to reinforce cognitive stimulation and promote socialization.
• Train Mental Health staff to carry out activities when the RT is not present and fill in for staff as needed.
• Plan community education events and cultivate a team culture of kindness and accountability.
• Create weekly schedules that meet CMS guidelines and provide therapeutic benefit for patients; develop and implement activities for groups based on functioning; ensure safety.

As PMC’s Inpatient Recreational Therapist, your focus will be on the 3Cs; Care, Community and Compliance.

• Care: Organize patient activities and patient contact to reinforce cognitive stimulation, to encourage socialization and promote self-initiative. Train Mental Health staff to carry out activities when the Recreational Therapist is not present. Fill in for program staff as needed.
• Community: Plan community education events; including thematic decoration and special events. Cultivate a team culture of kindness and accountability, promoting a positive, calm, joyful environment throughout the units.
• Compliance: Create weekly schedules that meet CMS guidelines and provide therapeutic benefit for the patients. Develop and implement therapeutic activities for small and large groups based on participant’s level of functioning. Exercise accountability for patients and staff safety.

Requirements

• Documented qualifications, licensing, and/or training specific to activities or therapeutic recreation - required
• CTRS Certification - preferred
• One-year experience in a patient activities program in a health care setting - preferred
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in an associated field, such as Therapeutic Recreation, Sociology, Psychology, or Social Services, preferred, with at least two years’ experience working with psychiatric patients in an inpatient setting - preferred
• Basic computer knowledge - preferred
• Strong interpersonal skills - preferred
• Current CPR - provided
• Handle with Care Training - provided
