Job summary

McLaren Health is seeking a qualified Recreational Therapist to assess patients, develop individualized treatment plans, and monitor progress. You will coordinate discharge planning from the first visit and supervise staff in a patient-centered care setting.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation, NCTRC certification, a valid driver's license, and BLS certification. Clinical experience is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation.
  • NCTRC certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • BLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient evaluations through history taking and systems review to obtain data.
  • Establishes an individualized plan of care addressing impairments identified in evaluation and per physician orders.
  • Conducts ongoing reassessment of patient response to treatment.
  • Initiates and manages discharge planning from the first visit through treatment.
  • Supervises and delegates to ancillary staff and students per state laws and department policy.
  • Completes legible, accurate documentation within established timelines and in accordance with policies and regulations.
  • Communicates with patients, families, caregivers, and health team using AIDET.
  • Assesses educational needs of patient and family and provides targeted education.
  • Participates in professional development through in-service meetings and literature review.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Maintains a safe environment and complies with safety standards.
  • Functions within state-defined scope of practice.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job description

Position Summary

The recreational therapist accurately assesses and identifies deficits in a patient’s ability to perform recreational and social activities in their daily lives. They develop an individualized treatment plan with patient-centered goals to strengthen recreational, social, emotional, physical, and communication skills.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  1. Performs patient evaluations through the process of obtaining history, performing relevant systems review to obtain data.
  2. Establishes an individualized plan of care and selects treatment techniques that addresses the specific impairments identified in the evaluation and in accordance with physician orders.
  3. Conducts ongoing reassessment of the patient and their response to treatment.
  4. Initiates and manages the discharge plan beginning at the first visit and continuing throughout treatment.
  5. Supervises and delegates to ancillary staff and students consistent with state laws and department policy.
  6. Completes legible, accurate, and clear documentation within the established timeframe identified in the department policy and procedure and in accordance with accreditation requirements and insurance regulations.
  7. Communicates with the patient, family, caregivers, significant others, and members of the health care team to promote maximum benefit of care utilizing AIDET.
  8. Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, caregiver, or significant other and provides education to meet those needs.
  9. Participates in professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, including in-service meetings, workshops, and by reading current literature concerning scope of practice.
  10. Actively participates in quality improvement activities.
  11. Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and staff. Complies with appropriate and approved safety standards.
  12. Functions within scope of practice as defined by the state’s practice act.
  13. Performs other related duties as required and directed.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation.
  • Current certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification Board as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license and a driver’s record approved by the medical center.
  • BLS certification.

Preferred:

  • One year of clinical experience as a recreational therapist.
