Job summary

County of Maui is seeking a Recreation Technician I to plan, coordinate and conduct established district recreation programs and activities, and supervise lower level Recreation Assistants; and perform other related duties as required. SHIFT MAY VARY, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS, INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

Appointment may be made at any rate within the salary range from SR-13C ($3,900) to SR-13E ($4,221) per month.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school and 1.5 years in public contact, group activities, or sports participation.
• Ability to use personal computers and perform basic office tasks.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and conduct athletic, cultural, social and recreational activities.
• Review requests and suggestions from community groups regarding recreational needs.
• Publicize activities and seeds and schedules teams.
• Monitors the overall activity of recreation programs and facilities; ensure safety and housekeeping.
• Coordinates and supervises the use of parks, playgrounds and facilities; recruits and trains staff.
• Prepares reports of activities and maintains records.

Distinguishing Characteristicks:

This class differs from the Recreation Technician II in that the Recreation Technician I is distinguished by its primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and conducting established district recreation programs and activities, and/or supervising lower level Recreation Assistants; whereas the Recreation Technician II is distinguished by its primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and conducting established countywide recreation programs and activities, and/or supervising lower level Recreation Assistants.

• Plans, coordinates and conducts athletic, cultural, social and recreational activities;
• Meets with and reviews requests and suggestions made by community groups regarding their recreational needs;
• Plans, organizes and coordinates recreational activities in consultation with supervisors and incorporates appropriate community input;
• Publicizes the recreational activity;
• Seeds and schedules teams;
• Manages athletic facilities by promoting safe practices, preventing vandalism and abuse;
• Provides attendant and housekeeping services;
• Coordinates and supervises the use of parks, playgrounds and facilities;
• Recruits, trains and assigns officials;
• Arranges for awards;
• Arranges for housing and transportation for visitors as necessary;
• Monitors the overall activity of recreation programs and activities;
• May officiate;
• Compiles results and provides results to participants and the news media;
• Prepares reports of activities;
• Recommends necessary improvements and repairs to parks, playgrounds and facilities;
• May supervise lower level recreation personnel;
• Performs other related duties as required.

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one and one-half (1 1/2) years of experience in public contact, group activities, or participation in sports teams or clubs at the high school level or above.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).

Knowledge of:

Practical application of the principles, practices and techniques of recreational activities; the proper care and maintenance techniques of equipment and facilities; principles and practices of instruction; group behavior; public relations; use of standard office machines and equipment, including personal computers.

Ability to:

Plan, coordinate and conduct recreational activities; stimulate participant interest, enthusiasm and confidence in recreational pursuits; instruct and demonstrate recreational activities; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with the staff and the public; keep records and prepare reports; use a personal computer.
