Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU - Recreation Therapy Technician

Position Overview

The Recreation Therapy Technician assists therapists with recreation therapy programming and activities. This position supports patients and families following therapist instructions to achieve therapy goals. Responsibilities include organizing and maintaining department cleanliness, preparing for activities and events, and performing clerical duties.

Requirements
  • Licensure/Certification: N/A for hire; current CPR certification required for continued employment.
  • Experience: Experience working with children with disabilities in camps, daycare, hospital settings, special education, or volunteer roles. Proficiency with computers and software such as Microsoft Office, email, and calendars.
  • Preferred Experience: Previous experience in recreational activities.
  • Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of post-high school coursework in human services, education, or related fields is preferred. Work experience may substitute for formal credentials with HR approval.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care activities under therapist supervision.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized department environment.
  • Document progress notes accurately for therapist review.
  • Support patients and families emotionally and behaviorally, including siblings.
  • Supervise volunteers as needed.
  • Participate in program development, quality assurance, and ongoing education.
  • Exhibit excellent customer service skills.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Additional Information

No supervisory responsibilities. The role involves physical activities such as lifting 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing and sitting, bending, walking, and reaching. Mental and sensory skills include reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, and clear speech. Emotional resilience is essential to handle multiple priorities and adapt to change. The position primarily serves pediatric and adolescent age groups.
