Recreation Supervisor – Facilities & Operations

Department: Recreation


Reports To: Recreation Manager


Status: Full-Time Position


FLSA Status: Exempt

General Summary:

Under the direction of the Recreation General Manager, the Recreation Supervisor – Facilities & Operations provides leadership and oversight of recreation facilities, fitness operations, guest services, custodial services, maintenance coordination, and operational systems. This position ensures facilities are safe, functional, adequately staffed, clean, and prepared to support recreation programs and community use year-round.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Facility Operations and Readiness


  1. Direct daily operations of recreation facilities and assigned service areas, ensuring facilities remain safe, functional, accessible, clean, and welcoming.

  2. Establish and maintain operational procedures, service standards, staffing levels, and resources necessary for year-round operations.

  3. Monitor facility usage, performance, service demands, and operational effectiveness; implement improvements as needed.

  4. Coordinate responses to operational challenges and service disruptions to maintain continuity across facilities.

  5. Support recreation programs, events, rentals, and community use through effective facility and operational planning.


Fitness and Wellness Operations


  1. Oversee fitness center operations and assigned staff.

  2. Monitor membership trends, customer satisfaction, operational performance, and service effectiveness.

  3. Support the development, evaluation, and long-term planning of fitness and wellness services.

  4. Oversee fitness equipment lifecycle management and replacement planning.


Guest Services and Recreation Management Systems


  1. Establish and maintain customer service standards throughout recreation facilities.

  2. Oversee guest services, registration, membership, and customer account processes.

  3. Respond to escalated customer concerns and operational service issues.

  4. Oversee recreation management software and related systems, including utilization, reporting, procedures, and staff training.

  5. Identify and implement technology and process improvements that support efficient service delivery.


Custodial Services, Maintenance, and Asset Management


  1. Direct custodial operations, facility cleanliness standards, inspections, and quality assurance efforts.

  2. Oversee custodial supply procurement and inventory management.

  3. Coordinate maintenance and repair activities and serve as liaison between facility operations and maintenance personnel.

  4. Monitor contractor and vendor performance.

  5. Identify facility improvement priorities and participate in capital, asset replacement, and long-term infrastructure planning.


Staff Leadership and Workforce Development


  1. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate assigned employees.

  2. Establish performance expectations and accountability measures; provide regular coaching and feedback.

  3. Develop staff skills and leadership capacity and support succession and workforce planning.

  4. Promote teamwork, collaboration, and operational excellence.


Financial Administration, Risk Management, and Organizational Support


  1. Develop and administer operational budgets; monitor expenditures, resource utilization, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.

  2. Assist with capital equipment and replacement planning and ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

  3. Ensure compliance with operational policies, procedures, and safety standards.

  4. Investigate incidents and operational concerns and participate in emergency preparedness and response efforts.

  5. Support department-wide initiatives and projects as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provides direct supervision to professional, technical, and support personnel responsible for fitness and wellness services, guest services, registration support, custodial services, and facility operations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:


  1. Knowledge of recreation facility operations, guest services, and customer experience principles.

  2. Knowledge of budget administration, resource allocation, vendor coordination, and contract management.

  3. Strong staff leadership, workforce management, coaching, and performance management skills.

  4. Knowledge of risk management, emergency preparedness, and facility safety practices.

  5. Proficiency with recreation management software and related operational systems.

  6. Effective communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.


Working Environment/Physical Activities:


  1. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  2. Will be required to work outside or drive in varying temperatures and conditions.

  3. Frequently works in a climate‑controlled office environment but may be exposed to extreme heat/cold and wetness/humidity on an occasional basis.

  4. Must be able to perform a varied work schedule; holidays and weekend duties may be required.


Education/Experience:


  1. Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Management, Facility Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.

  2. Five years of progressively responsible experience in facility operations, recreation operations, customer service management, or operational leadership, including supervisory experience.

  3. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.
