Job summary

Hyland Hills Park & Recreation District seeks a Maintenance Tech II to maintain irrigation, landscapes, recreation facilities, and related structures. You will perform repairs, preventive maintenance, and operate equipment, collaborating with seasonal staff and contractors.

Maintenance Tech II

FLSA Status - Full Time/Non-exempt

General Summary:

Under the supervision of Parks and Facility Maintenance Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, this position maintains and repairs irrigation, landscaped areas, recreation facilities, including building maintenance/repair, undeveloped grounds, structures and equipment in parks and facilities owned, maintained or operated by the Hyland Hills Park & Recreation District. This position regularly serves in a team atmosphere along with other maintenance employees, seasonal staff, or contractors on a variety of landscaping, facility maintenance and repair projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Works with full-time, part-time, seasonal staff and contractors in parks/building maintenance activities. The growing season focus will be on irrigation/parks maintenance and non-growing season focus will be on building maintenance and projects.
  2. Maintains landscaped and undeveloped terrain; mows, weeds, rakes and edges lawns and natural areas; installs turf; applies fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides; installs, operates and repairs manual and automatic irrigation systems; tills soil and mixes in soil amendments; plants, transplants, mulches, prunes shrubs and trees.
  3. Constructs, maintains and renovates walkways and trails; clears brush and debris; hauls and spreads gravel & wood chips; installs and repairs gates, barriers, fences and signs; sweeps paved walks and parking areas.
  4. Maintains and repairs sports fields and recreation areas; bleachers, pavilions, picnic tables and recreation/park equipment.
  5. Recommends and participates in repair and improvement of district facilities, including restrooms, buildings, shelters and athletic facilities; performs basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work, as well as HVAC repair/service.
  6. Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment, including mowers, sprinkler systems, edger's, chippers, plumbing fixtures and light replacement.
  7. May assist senior mechanic in diagnosing and troubleshooting necessary repairs on vehicles and/or equipment.
  8. You must be able to work flexible hours and weekends on a limited basis.
  9. Maintain cleanliness and beauty of district parks and facilities by performing trash removal, power washing shelters and graffiti removal as well as mowing, trimming, pruning.
  10. Performs winter plowing and shoveling of all District facilities.
  11. Must be willing to improve skillset and knowledge by continuing education and learning from others.
  12. Must use the district CMMS work order system, it will be a significant and mandatory part of your day.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Working knowledge of:

Techniques and practices of grounds, irrigation, landscape and building maintenance and repair; use, operation, maintenance and repair of building and park maintenance equipment and tools, including trailers, tractors, mowers, blowers, edger's, chain saws and other hand and power tools; occupational hazards and basic safety practices and procedures; methods for handling hazardous materials, including landscaping chemicals, paints and thinners, gasoline and cleaning solutions; basic techniques of painting, electrical, plumbing & carpentry and building maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

To safely operate motor vehicles along with manual and power tools; repair and maintain small gasoline engines; install and repair underground irrigation systems, including water scheduling and programming of automatic irrigation controls; read and understand landscaping plans and specifications; oversee the work of assigned seasonal maintenance crews. Be able to make minor plumbing repairs, drywall repairs, painting, carpentry, playground repair and maintenance. Ability to troubleshoot and investigate repairs on all parks and facility equipment and infrastructure. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with District employees, contractors, community service workers, volunteers and the public.

Working Environment/Physical Activities:

Duties require frequent to continuous standing, walking, squatting, kneeling, bending, twisting, balancing, climbing, overhead reaching, grasping, fine motor control, and the ability to carry up to 60 pounds, lift and push/pull 100 pounds. Duties also involve exposure to confined spaces, loud noises, vibration, slippery and/or uneven surfaces, working at heights, exhaust fumes and dust, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions including extreme temperatures.

Education/Experience and Other Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent. Driving is required for District business on a regular basis or to accomplish work. Must possess a valid unrestricted driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record throughout the course of employment. Must obtain Playground inspection certification within 12 months of employment. The ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 12 months of employment is preferred.
