Job summary

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation seeks a Recreation Specialist to plan, organize, and run diverse programs for youth, adults, and seniors. The role is based at Tom Sykes Recreation Center with mornings, days, evenings and weekend shifts on a rotating schedule.

Ideal candidates have leadership, strong communication, time management, and safety awareness. Education options include a related Bachelor's or Associate degree with varied experience requirements; driving may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in park and recreation administration or related field.
• Bachelor’s degree with 6 months of prior Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation experience.
• Associates or Bachelor's with two years of related experience.
• Four years of similar related experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop, lead, and evaluate programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility.
• Provide customer service and handle funds for information, program registration, center daily use and rentals.
• Ensure safety of participants and administer first aid when necessary.
• Enforce rules and regulations.
• Collect fees and registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals.
• Assist in light maintenance of facilities and recreational areas.
• Referee at various sports activities.
• May provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper, or linesperson at games.
• Supervise children involved in after-school, summer, or other recreational programs.
• Handles inquiries and complaints from public.
• Some programs may require driving a county vehicle to transport participants or commute to a different location.
• Assist with department events and field trips.
• May serve as manager on duty if Facility Manager is not available.
