Job summary

The State of South Carolina, Coastal Regional Center in Summerville, is seeking a Recreational Specialist to plan and oversee therapeutic recreation for residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Qualifications

• High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor's degree in physical education, recreation or related field may substitute for work experience.
• Knowledge of various types of recreational activities.
• Knowledge of how to plan, organize and oversee recreational activities.
• Knowledge of recreational therapy principles, techniques and methods.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinates.
• Ability to motivate and sustain the interest of residents.
• Ability to instruct residents in various recreational activities.
• Ability to communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Plan, implement and oversee recreation programs to meet residents' needs, desires and abilities.
• Identify alternate programs and weekend schedules for residents, including hazardous weather, weekends, and special circumstances.
• Coordinate on/off campus outings; escort or transport residents to activities.
• Requisition and maintain supplies; provide decorations for events.
• Provide direct hands-on care; support daily living skills; monitor health and safety of residents.
• May stay over or work additional shifts to maintain staffing levels and safety.
• Perform additional duties as required.
