Job summary

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Recreation Program Leader to plan, implement, lead and facilitate aquatics, fitness, wellness, arts and culture programming for the community. The role involves guiding staff, ensuring safety, and handling administrative tasks related to programs and facilities.

Qualifications include ARC Lifeguard training within 6 months of hire, First Aid/CPR for Professional Rescuer, and a minimum two years of college with emphasis on recreation planning.

Qualifications

• ARC Lifeguard training certificate required within 6 months of hire.
• Standard First Aid and CPR for Professional Rescuer required.
• Two years of college coursework with emphasis on recreation programming or related field preferred.
• Valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia required.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate recreation programs across aquatics, fitness, wellness, arts and culture, leisure, trips, and tours.
• Lead and facilitate programs and provide instruction, guidance, and customer service to participants.
• Supervise aquatic and recreation staff, including training, feedback, and performance management.
• Enforce safety procedures and respond to emergencies; ensure compliance with policies and standards.
• Perform administrative duties such as scheduling, recordkeeping, reports, and incident documentation.
