The City of Burien's Recreation Division seeks a dependable, enthusiastic leader to create safe, engaging, and memorable experiences for elementary and middle school youth. You will help lead day-to-day programming, guide other staff, and serve as a positive role model.

This temporary, non-exempt role offers after-school shifts (afternoon hours) with 0–19 hours weekly, across Sept 2026 through June 2027, and may involve transporting youth using a city van.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent education/experience considered.

Job description

Do you love working with kids and making a positive impact on your community? The City of Burien's Recreation Division is seeking a dependable, enthusiastic leader who is passionate about creating safe, engaging, and memorable experiences for elementary and middle school youth. In this role, you will help lead day-to-day programming, support and guide other recreation staff, and serve as a positive role model for youth in our programs.

Multiple Vacancies: This recruitment may be used to fill multiple vacancies. Applications will be reviewed as vacancies occur, and interviews may be conducted throughout the recruitment period. One current vacancy is eligible for participation in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Retirement eligibility will depend on the position filled.

Schedule: 0-19 hours per week

Shifts: Monday - Thursday hours are typically 2:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Friday hours are typically 1:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Duration: September 2026 through June 2027, approximately

Employment Type: This position is a non-exempt, temporary, intermittent position.

What You'll Do

  • Lead safe, fun, and educational programs geared for elementary and middle school youth at designated programming sites with our partner schools
  • Develop programs and activities
  • Serve as the staff lead for assigned programs at designated programming sites
  • Provides transportation for youth using a city van to different site locations.

Education and/or Experience

  • One year of experience leading or teaching youth programs, with one year of college coursework in Recreation, Education and/or related field or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which would allow an individual to perform the duties of the position will be considered.

Special Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check
  • Valid Washington State Driver's license and satisfactory driving record
  • Valid First Aid and Child and Adult CPR Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a public health department food handler's permit may be required
