Job summary

The City of Lathrop is seeking a Recreation Coordinator I to oversee and coordinate youth and adult sports programs and facilities, and assist with training and supervision of volunteers and coaches. This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating youth and adult sports programs, facilities and assists with the training and supervision of volunteers and coaches.

The City of Lathrop is currently recruiting for a Recreation Coordinator in the Recreation Division. We are looking for a motivated, self-starter to join our team! This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating youth and adult sports programs, facilities and assists with the training and supervision of volunteers and coaches. Additional duties include but are not limited to; develops, implements, and oversees the day-to-day operations of recreation programs, including youth and adult sports leagues and activities. Coordinates program and league schedule, monitors expenditures, and purchases necessary program supplies and equipment. Maintains accurate records and reports related to attendance, activities, supplies, and other program information while regularly evaluating existing programs and recommending new programs and services to meet community needs. Responds to public inquiries through telephone, correspondence, and public meetings while promoting programs and activities through various outreach efforts, including flyers, media, and direct community engagement. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community members, organizations, and community groups while developing a strong volunteer base. Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates officials, coaches, and volunteers to ensure recreation programs and sports leagues are operated safely, efficiently, and successfully.

About Lathrop

Incorporated in 1989, the City of Lathrop is located in the Northern San Joaquin Valley and sits east and west of the San Joaquin River. Interstate 5, Interstate 205, and State Route 120 intersect within the city. We are located approximately 70 miles east of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Sacramento. Monterey, Santa Cruz, Napa Valley, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are all located within 2 hours of Lathrop. Lathrop is centrally located within a 30-minute commute of Tracy, Manteca, Stockton, Ripon, Lodi, Modesto, and Livermore.

The Department’s January 1, 2026, population estimates show Lathrop grew from 38,791 residents in 2025 to 40,942 residents in 2026, an increase of 2,151 people, or 5.5%. The report ranks Lathrop as the second fastest-growing city in California with a population over 30,000, behind only Mountain House. Lathrop also ranked fifth among California cities under 300,000 residents for the largest numeric population increase. With the continued growth in the residential communities, our population is anticipated to reach approximately 70,000.

Essential Functions

Including, but not limited to the following:

  • Develops, implements and supervises the day-to-day operations of a recreation program; assists with the preparation of the Department budget; recommends and monitors expenditures; purchases all supplies for assigned programs.
  • Responds to public inquiries about programs made by telephone, correspondence or during public meetings; develops a volunteer base; promotes public awareness of available activities through the media, newspapers and flyers; maintains contact with individual community members and various community groups.
  • Maintains records and reports on activities, attendance, supplies and other pertinent information for assigned recreation programs and activities; develops and recommends new programs; reviews and evaluates current programs.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates and coordinates sports programs and leagues; schedules the various leagues and sports programs.
  • Recruits, trains, and evaluates officials, coaches, and volunteers; supervises officials, coaches and volunteers.

Supervision Exercised/Received

Receives general supervision from the Director of Parks and Recreation or designee. May exercise direct and indirect supervision over assigned volunteers.

Salary
  • Recreation Coordinator I - $62,051 to $75,423 Annually.
Education and Experience

A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of three years of responsible experience in recreation, sports, youth and adult program coordination or a related field, and a high school diploma or equivalent.

License/Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver’s license and CPR certification.

Physical Working Conditions

Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when reading correspondence, statistical data and using a computer. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot and cold.

  • Tier one - CalPERS Classic employees prior to April 30, 2011; 2% at 55 Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) retirement benefit.
    • Employee contribution is 7%.
  • Tier two - CalPERS Classic employees hired after April 29, 2011; 2% at 60 Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) retirement benefit.
    • Employee contribution is 7%.
  • Tier three - New CalPERS members hired after December 31, 2012; 2% at 62 Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
    • Employee contribution is 7.75%.

No participation in Social Security; there is a deduction for Medicare
