Recreation Assistant (Water Safety/Swim Instructor)

Summary

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Forces Branch; Fleet Readiness; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC); NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD located in Portsmouth, VA. The incumbent serves as Water Safety/Swim Instructor for the Aquatics Program, primarily instructing swimming and water safety classes for patrons of all ages.

Responsibilities

• Instruct various swimming levels and strokes for students from infants to adults.
• Teach basic diving, safety, and survival skills.
• Collaborate with lifeguards to ensure safety during lessons.
• Enforce pool safety standards and operational rules.
• Plan and organize instruction methods aligned with program guidelines.
• Manage activities to ensure high-quality instruction.
• Develop individualized swim programs and promote skill progression.
• Provide feedback to parents/guardians on student progress.
• Conduct equipment orientations and inspections.
• Administer assessments and certifications per policies.
• Maintain records and documentation of lessons.
• Work with the Program Manager to improve teaching skills.
• Prepare incident reports and handle emergencies.
• Manage hazardous materials responsibly.
• Verify patron identification and assist in program development.
• Maintain cleanliness of equipment and facilities.
• Provide facility information to patrons via phone.
• Complete daily reports and handle cash transactions as needed.

Requirements

• Pass background checks and E-Verify.
• Maintain Water Safety Instructor certification.
• Maintain Lifeguard Training, CPR, and First Aid certifications.

Qualifications

Applicants should demonstrate experience and skills in:

• Instructional methods and safety standards.
• Water safety equipment and basic first aid.
• Arithmetic for reports and transactions.
• Swimming ability (300 yards in less than 10 minutes).
• Assessing and instructing swimming and water safety skills.
• Rescue and safety enforcement skills.
• Effective communication skills.
