Job summary

Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home in Hilo, Hawaii, seeks an Activities Assistant to create meaningful opportunities for residents to connect, participate, and enjoy daily life. You will work with the Activities Director and the interdisciplinary team to promote physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Responsibilities include planning activities, supporting participation, coordinating with nursing and social services, and maintaining records.

Qualifications

• Experience working with older adults or in senior living, recreation, or related settings is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with residents, families, visitors, and staff.
• Ability to organize activities, follow schedules, maintain accurate records, and work with an interdisciplinary team.
• Must be able to read, write, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
• Must meet health, safety, background, drug screening, and other employment requirements.

• Collaborate with nursing, social services, and other departments to align activities with resident care plans.

• Assist the Activities Director with documenting activity records, calendars, supplies, equipment, and reports; maintain required documentation.
• In the absence of the Activities Director, supervise the activity department to ensure programs continue meeting resident needs.

The Activities Assistant helps create meaningful opportunities for residents to connect, participate, and enjoy daily life within the facility. Working alongside the Activities Director and the interdisciplinary team, this role supports engaging activities, outings, and programs that promote residents’ physical, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing daily activities, special events, and outings that encourage resident participation, engagement, exercise, relaxation, and social connection.
• Support residents with participation in activities, including assisting with transportation to and from activity areas and outings as needed.
• Work collaboratively with nursing, social services, and other departments to ensure activities support individual resident interests, needs, and care plans.
• Build positive relationships with residents and families, encourage their involvement in activity planning, and respond appropriately to resident and family requests or concerns.
• Assist the Activities Director with departmental operations, including maintaining activity records, calendars, supplies, equipment, reports, and other required documentation.
• In the absence of the Activities Director, assume assigned responsibility for directing the activity department and ensuring scheduled activities and programs continue to meet resident needs.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working with older adults, in senior living, long-term care, recreation, or a related setting is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact positively, professionally, and cooperatively with residents, families, visitors, and employees.
• Ability to organize activities, follow schedules, maintain accurate records, and work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Basic ability to read, write, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
• Must be able to meet applicable state and federal requirements, maintain regular attendance, and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must meet applicable health, safety, background, drug screening, and other employment requirements.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements
