Job description

Are you looking for an opportunity for professional growth and development while serving the community?

We invite you to join the City of San Bernardino's Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department as a part-time Recreation Aide!

About the City:

As a future member of our team, you’ll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California's Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history — shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences — continues to inspire the city’s evolving identity.

San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It’s a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose — and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.

About the Position:

The Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is seeking customer-service oriented individuals as part-time Recreation Aide cashiers. This position is responsible for assisting customers with general inquiries while providing excellent customer service to the public.

Cashiers support daily operations at City recreation facilities by processing payments, maintaining accurate records, balancing cash drawers, and assisting patrons in a friendly and professional manner. This position is ideal for individuals who are organized, detail-oriented, and enjoy working in a fast-paced public environment. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to provide courteous service while handling financial transactions accurately.

Part-time Recreation Aides work an average of 20 hours per week and are assigned to varied work shifts, including weekends.

The Ideal Candidate:

Is an enthusiastic, dependable, and friendly team player who enjoys helping others. They bring a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment. They can follow directions, communicate effectively, and assist with activities. Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends, is important. Cashiering experience is desirable.

A Day in the Life:

Throughout the day, you will assist community members with program registrations, admissions, payments, and general questions while creating a welcoming and positive experience for the public. You may greet patrons at the front counter, answer phone calls, process transactions, balance cash drawers, and support daily operations at recreation facilities.

Cashiers play an important role in helping recreation programs and facilities run smoothly by maintaining accurate records, assisting staff with administrative support, and providing friendly, professional customer service in a fast-paced environment. Depending on the assignment, you may work at aquatic facilities, community centers, parks, or special events while interacting with patrons of all ages.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to read and write.
  • No experience is required.
  • Age 15 or older.
Knowledge of:

Methods, materials and equipment used for recreation, social and athletic activities.

Ability to:
  • See in the normal visual range with or without correction;
  • Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction;
  • Transport materials and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Work indoors and out in a variety of environmental conditions;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
