Job summary

City of Midland seeks a clerical specialist to support the health department environmental section. Perform routine clerical work, assist with environmental health permitting, maintain records, process fees, and deliver customer service to protect public health and community well-being.

You will greet the public, answer phones, receive payments for permits (food, septic, swimming pool, day care), file applications, and manage daily cash reports.

Qualifications

Job description

Performs all routine clerical work for the health department environmental section.


This position directly supports the City of Midland’s strategic goal to Set the Standard for a Safe and Secure City by assisting with environmental health permitting, maintaining accurate records, processing fees, and providing customer service that helps protect public health and community well-being.



  • Answers the phone, takes messages, greets visitors and assists citizens with questions or concerns regarding environmental health services. Sets up appointments for services.

  • Receives payments for food, septic, swimming pool or day care permits. Documents fees and provides receipts. Types and files all applications for permits.

  • Maintains daily cash reports and maintains filing system.

  • Maintains inventory of office supplies and requisitions replacements as necessary. Assists in tracking of office operating expenses.

  • Establishes files for customers and keeps records of permits.

  • Assists with public health activities in the office and in the community.

  • Performs related duties as required.


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:


  • Ability to sit, stand, and move inside the building. Employee sits or stands at a counter or desk to process paperwork and receive customer documents and payments. May be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals while working in health department.


REQUIRED CONTACTS:


  • Employee works with the public or other employees directly when acting as a receptionist, answering inquiries, processing information or making referrals to the proper staff person. Employee will also work with the public while participating in community events.


Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills


  • Basic knowledge of health and/or public health capabilities. Basic knowledge of data entry requirements. Ability to read and understand manuals and reports to record work activities, keeps records and works with computers and people. Skill in the operation and maintenance of several office machines and equipment such as computers, copiers and credit card readers. Skill in typing, bookkeeping and customer service.


Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification


  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, with six months to one year in a clerical position with experience in word processing and general bookkeeping skills. Typing skill of 45 words per minute.
