Job summary

Canteen, a member of Compass Group USA, is seeking a Receiving Supervisor in Chicago, IL. The role leads inbound receiving, coordinates the distribution team, and ensures quality, safety, and timely delivery across the operation.

The position requires 3-5 years of leadership in high-volume receiving and strong communication skills. Familiarity with Google Workspace and Excel is preferred; forklift certification is a plus.

• Train staff on food safety and GMPs; support audits and compliance.
• Lead hiring, scheduling, and performance discussions with the Operations Manager.

Salary: $27 - $30 / hour, depending on experience (negotiable)

Job Summary:

The Receiving Supervisor champions The FruitGuys' 5R culture and ensures customer commitments are met through excellence in quality, safety, compliance, and operational execution. This role oversees receiving operations, leads the distribution team, drives vendor and employee performance, optimizes resources, and supports continuous improvement while delivering exceptional service to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Receiving Operations & Quality

• Supervise inbound freight in compliance with SOPs, food safety requirements, GMPs, and organic standards.
• Serve as the facility's fruit quality expert, ensuring all products meet company and customer expectations.
• Manage the ripening program and monitor product readiness.
• Evaluate, document, and track product quality using company systems and equipment.
• Conduct quality inspections, taste testing, and seasonal quality assessments.
• Oversee inventory, supply management, cooler organization, and FIFO rotation.
• Maintain vendor relationships and ensure effective communication regarding quality standards.
• Manage donation processes, receiving records, and data entry.

Food Safety & Compliance

• Train and coach employees on food safety, GMPs, and organic requirements.
• Conduct audits, maintain records, and support facility audit readiness.
• Verify supplier, transportation, temperature, sanitation, and compliance standards.
• Ensure equipment, facilities, and contracted services meet food safety requirements.
• Execute sanitation programs and maintain department cleanliness.
• Support maintenance activities while preserving food safety compliance.

Leadership & Team Development

• Provide coaching, feedback, and development opportunities for team members.
• Partner with the Operations Manager on hiring, staffing, scheduling, and performance management.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and monitor team performance metrics.
• Review payroll, approve time-off requests, and submit HR documentation.
• Ensure adherence to all company policies, procedures, and training requirements.

Performance Expectations

• Support the region's 99.5% delivery success goal through accurate receiving and quality verification.
• Ensure proper ripening, inventory rotation, and product quality management.

Qualifications

Experience

3-5 years of leadership experience in high-volume receiving required; fresh produce or perishable goods experience preferred.

Skills

Strong communication, leadership, organization, time management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and customer service skills. Proficiency with Google Workspace and basic Excel required; ERP/NetSuite experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

Frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, walking, reaching, and working in refrigerated environments. Ability to operate warehouse equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, and related machinery.

Licenses

Valid driver's license required; forklift certification preferred.
