Job summary

Seattle City Light seeks a Real-Time Operations Supervisor to lead the Real-Time Power Marketing group, ensuring reliable operation and real-time trading of energy, transmission, and capacity across WECC markets.

You will coordinate with Wholesale Contracts, Resource Planning, System Operations, Risk Management, and other groups, ensuring compliance with NERC/WECC standards and hydro license requirements while reporting to senior management.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in business administration, mathematics, engineering, economics, finance or related field.
• Minimum of three years' experience in power marketing.
• Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.
• Valid Washington State Driver's License.

Job description

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The Real-Time Operations Supervisor position is in the Power Operations & Marketing group. This group's mission is to reliably and cost effectively serve City Light's electric load by scheduling the operations of its generation resources and power contracts while meeting environmental considerations. This includes marketing surplus energy, transmission, and capacity into wholesale energy markets to maximize value and keep rates low for City Light's customers. This position will report to the Senior Manager of Power Operations & Marketing.

Real-Time Power Marketing is a 365-day, 24-hour desk. The Real-Time Operations Supervisor will provide leadership and supervision to the Real-Time Power Marketing group which is responsible for real-time marketing of City Light's surplus/deficit energy/transmission/capacity position to ensure load/resource balance in the Western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) and in the bilateral markets. This individual must be familiar with the Western Systems Power Pool agreement, Bonneville Power Administration Transmission business practices, hydro operations, NERC /WECC, and CAISO standards and procedures. The Real-Time Operations Supervisor will lead the Real-Time Power Marketing group into the Western Energy Imbalance Market.

Here is more about what you’ll be doing:

• Manage Seattle City Light's hydro system, renewable portfolio, and long-term contractual resources.
• Assist Seattle System Operation Center personnel in making sure that NERC reliability standards are met each hour of the day and night.
• Supervise marketing of surplus/deficit energy/transmission/capacity in the real-time markets in compliance with City Light's Risk Policies and Procedures while meeting hydro license requirements.
• Perform and supervise scheduling of energy products in the Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC)
• Perform generation maintenance outage coordination.
• Perform analysis on trading activity, market participation, new contract acquisition and other ad hoc requests as needed. Communicate technical and market intelligence information and draft reports to the Power Management team
• Work collaboratively with Wholesale Contracts, Resource Planning, System Operations, Risk Management, Power Systems Automation, and other groups to anticipate and resolve operational and contractual issues.
• Represent City Light's interests at BPAT customer workshops and at CAISO and other regional stakeholder and technical forums.
• Develop and deliver executive presentations and communicate information in a manner appropriate for the audience and which provides a clear path for decision making.
• Implement hydro, renewable, bilateral, and EIM strategic operational plan during severe weather events.
• Collaborate with Day Ahead, Forward, Resource Planning, Risk, and other groups to execute Real-Time strategy in conjunction with long term planning and marketing strategic vision
• Train and mentor staff on contractual and operational objectives.
• Carry out hiring processes and performance appraisal of subordinates, and misc. administrative duties.
• Flex working hours as needed to meet job requirements throughout the year.
• Cover shifts if needed.
• Provide support outside of normal business hours as staff needs dictate.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration, mathematics, engineering, economics, finance or related field.

Experience: Minimum of three years' experience in power marketing.

Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Certification/License: Valid Washington State Driver's License.

• Knowledge of the Pacific Northwest reservoir system, scheduling and marketing of electric power.
• Experience in physical marketing of wholesale electricity products, ancillaries, and transmission type products.
• Familiarity with Bonneville Power Administration Transmission business practices, Western Systems Power Pool, NERC/WECC Reliability Standards and balancing authority responsibilities.
• Excellent analytical skill. Knowledge of dashboard creation, Excel VBA, Python, DMZ, OATI or similar deal capture suite, bid strategy/optimization, tableau experience preferred
• Familiarity managing and working with shift workers and 24/7 crew of employees
• Advanced knowledge of IT configuration, architecture, and optimization. The aptitude to work with Power Systems Automation staff to streamline workflow and automate redundant and unnecessary procedures
• Strong documentation, Vizio, sharepoint skills.

The full salary range for this position is $60.36 to $105.03 per hour.
