Boston Hire represents a leading real estate management and investment firm seeking an experienced Real Estate Accounting Manager. This role oversees day-to-day accounting for multiple properties, collaborates with leadership on cash management and financial reporting, and aids in policy development.

The ideal candidate will strengthen internal controls, drive efficiencies, and manage month-end close while supervising staff and coordinating across entities. AppFolio experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years progressive accounting experience; real estate or property management preferred.
  • Experience managing accounting across multiple entities or properties.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee full accounting cycle across all managed entities, including AP/AR, invoicing, tenant charges, collections, and reconciliations.
  • Supervise Staff Accountant, provide guidance, review work, and serve as escalation point.
  • Manage cash and banking activities, banking relationships, funding, and reconciling accounts.
  • Oversee weekly payment processing and check runs with proper approvals and controls.
  • Prepare and oversee monthly financial reporting for properties and entities, including statements and schedules.
  • Administer mortgage/debt activities, loan schedules, escrow monitoring, and lender reporting deadlines.
  • Oversee real estate tax compliance, track deadlines, and ensure timely payments.
  • Manage corporate/compliance requirements, LLC filings, W-9s, certificates of insurance.
  • Coordinate annual insurance audits and other third-party audits, ensuring timely documentation.
  • Oversee intercompany and corporate accounting activities, including management fee billings and payroll reconciliations.
  • Support budgeting/forecasting and provide data and insights for operating and investment decisions.
  • Develop and enhance accounting policies and procedures to promote consistency and scalability.
  • Lead AppFolio optimization initiatives, reporting enhancements, workflow automation, and templates.

Job description

Our client, a real estate management and investment firm, is hiring an experienced, hands-on Real Estate Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounting function and partner closely with leadership on cash management, financial reporting, and month-end close. This role will also help formalize accounting policies and procedures, strengthen internal controls, and drive efficiencies within AppFolio as the company continues to grow. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing multiple properties, entities, and competing priorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the full accounting cycle across all managed entities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoice processing, tenant charges, collections, and related reconciliations.
  • Supervise and mentor the Staff Accountant, providing guidance, reviewing work product, and serving as the primary escalation point for day-to-day accounting matters.
  • Manage cash and banking activities across entities, including maintaining banking relationships, coordinating funding for operating and capital requirements, and reconciling bank and corporate credit card accounts.
  • Manage weekly payment processing and check runs, ensuring appropriate documentation, approvals, accuracy, and adherence to internal controls.
  • Prepare and oversee monthly financial reporting for properties and entities, including financial statements, variance analysis, and supporting schedules for ownership and management.
  • Administer mortgage and debt-related activities, including coordinating payments, maintaining loan schedules, monitoring escrow requirements, and meeting lender reporting deadlines.
  • Oversee real estate tax compliance, including tracking payment deadlines across jurisdictions and ensuring timely and accurate payments.
  • Manage corporate and entity-level compliance requirements, including LLC filings, vendor W-9 and certificate of insurance tracking, and other recurring reporting obligations.
  • Coordinate annual insurance audits and other third-party audits, ensuring timely delivery of requested documentation and effective communication with external parties.
  • Oversee intercompany and corporate accounting activities, including management fee billings, overhead reimbursements, and payroll-related reconciliations.
  • Support property-level budgeting and forecasting, providing accurate financial data, analysis, and insights to support operating and investment decisions.
  • Develop, document, and enhance accounting policies and procedures to promote consistency, strengthen internal controls, improve efficiency, and support organizational scalability.
  • Lead AppFolio optimization initiatives, including reporting enhancements, workflow automation, system adoption, standardized templates, and process improvements.
  • Support additional accounting, finance, and operational initiatives and ad hoc projects as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; real estate or property management experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing accounting across multiple entities or properties highly valued.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience developing or documenting accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate with leadership, and manage multiple entities and deadlines with strong organization and attention to details.
  • Previous supervisory experience is a plus but not required.
