Job summary

Spectrum 360 A NJ Non Profit Corp. is seeking a Reading Specialist to join Salem High School. The role focuses on professional development, assessment leadership, and curriculum/instruction for reading interventions in alignment with NJ standards.

The position requires a master’s in reading specialty and a valid NJ teaching certificate as a reading specialist, with at least five years in public schools. This is a ten-month assignment with comprehensive benefits and opportunities to coach

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide resources and training to school staff on scientifically based reading research and evidence-based practices.
  • Coach classroom teachers on implementation of reading interventions and use of data from assessments for instructional decisions.
  • Support implementation of district-approved reading programs and approaches.
  • Facilitate a network for teachers to observe and learn from each other’s practices.
  • Lead reading screening, progress monitoring, and outcome measures and interpret data for instructional decisions.
  • Review core, supplemental, and intensive materials for alignment with NJ standards and provide guidance on strategy implementation.
  • Organize and lead professional development for reading content knowledge district-wide.
  • Provide direct reading intervention instruction as determined by the district.
  • Meet regularly with literacy supervisors, coaches, principals, and CST members to assess program progress.

PRINCIPAL

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
    • Provide resources and training to school staff on scientifically based reading research and evidence-based practices.
    • Coach classroom teachers (e.g., co-teach, model, demonstrate, observe, and provide feedback) on the implementation of core, supplemental, and intensive intervention approaches for the reading and the use of data from valid and reliable assessments as the basis for instructional decision making.
    • Provide support for the implementation of the reading programs and approaches selected by the district.
    • Facilitate a support network for teachers as they implement recommended instructional practices; include opportunities for teachers to visit one another's classroom to observe the implementation of specified practices.
  2. ASSESSMENT
    • Lead the administration of reading screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic, and outcomes measures.
    • Work with the Director of Curriculum, literacy supervisors, coaches and teachers on the compilation and interpretation of assessment data, to determine adequate progress or those in need of supplemental or intensive intervention as well as grouping for core instruction.
    • Be familiar with the administration and interpretation of in-depth diagnostic measures or additional assessments commonly used in schools.
  3. CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
    • Use available guidance for reviewing core, supplemental and intensive intervention materials under consideration for purchases for evidence of alignment with NJ standards.
    • Know how to implement a range of effective strategies, analyze instruction, and provide clear, specific information on strategy implementation.
    • Help organize and lead school, school and district professional development opportunities to disseminate reading content knowledge to all teachers.
    • Provide direct instruction to students deemed in need of reading intervention as determined to be appropriate by the district.
  4. SCHOOL LIAISON
    • Meet regularly with the district literacy supervisors, literacy coaches, building principals, CST members and others to assess the progress of the implementation of program improvements and to modify elements as necessary.
    • Participate actively in school literacy team and district literacy team meetings.
    • Assist in the analysis of school-wide literacy strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in reading and teaching effectiveness.
    • Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration among staff to promote professional growth and accelerate the reading achievement of all students.
    • Attend all professional development and networking meetings designed for reading specialists.

In the performance of the above, the Reading Specialist shall visit the schools regularly and work cooperatively with the administrators and teachers.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ten (10) month position; governed by the Teachers' Association contract and calendar.

EVALUATIONS

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state laws and the provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of certified staff.
