Job summary

The Illinois Association of School Administrators seeks a Reading Specialist to design and implement Tier 2 and 3 interventions, including co-teaching in content areas. You will support disciplinary literacy and document progress through targeted assessments.

You will collaborate with teachers and specialists, participate in professional development, and help refine reading services and curriculum to boost literacy outcomes for students in Illinois high schools.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Reading.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with Reading Specialist endorsement K-12 or 9-12.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience, preferably in a high school.
  • Strong knowledge of structured literacy, the Active View of Reading framework, disciplinary literacy.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading interventions, including co-teaching in content courses, providing targeted small-group or one-on-one instruction according to student needs.
  • Support students with building disciplinary literacy skills to access and gain full benefit from course content materials and instruction.
  • Utilize structured literacy approaches where appropriate with focus on phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse.
  • Incorporate the Active View of Reading to address cognitive processes such as self-regulation and executive function skills.
  • Participate in the selection and administer benchmark assessments three times annually to monitor student progress in word recognition and language comprehension.
  • Develop comprehensive reader profiles and intervention plans for students using survey-level assessments to inform targeted instruction.
  • Monitor and document student progress, adjusting interventions as necessary.
  • Collaborate regularly with general education teachers, special education staff, and multilingual learner support to integrate reading interventions.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in literacy instruction.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the school's reading services, programs, and curriculum.
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress and strategies to support reading development at home.
  • Engage with community resources to enhance literacy opportunities for students.

Salary/Benefits

Per Faculty Senate collective bargaining agreement, initial placement on the salary schedule between BA and MA+60 depending on the educational level, and Step 1 and 5 depending on experience. Includes full benefits package.
