Job summary

UMIAQ Environmental seeks a knowledgeable RCRA Waste Compliance Specialist/Inspector to ensure facilities comply with RCRA and related regulations. The role involves inspections, audits, and providing guidance to regulated entities on hazardous and nonhazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal.

Candidates will plan and conduct fieldwork, data assessment, and reporting, interact with clients and vendors, and support environmental remediation projects across Alaska.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or equivalent.
• At least 5 years of related experience.
• Experience with hazardous waste management and environmental remediation.
• Proficient with MS Office, ArcGIS, AutoCAD.
• Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations; familiarity with RCRA/CERCLA/OSHA.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work independently.

Job description

UMIAQ Environmental is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented RCRA Waste Compliance Specialist/Inspector to join our team. This role will ensure facilities comply with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations related to nonhazardous and hazardous waste management. Primary duties include conducting inspections, audits, and evaluations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local hazardous waste regulations. Additionally, the role involves providing guidance and technical support to regulated entities to promote best practices in hazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal.

Responsibilities

• Comprehensive RCRA environmental consulting includes planning, data assessment, reporting, overseeing field personnel, travel, fieldwork, and/or sample collection.
• Review, evaluate, and interpret environmental data and prepare summary reports.
• Interact and communicate with clients, vendors, and staff at all levels in a professional manner.
• Enters confined spaces to clean the interior of tanks, trenches, drains, oil/water separators, boilers, etc., to remove liquids, solids, and residue utilizing different methods such as scraping, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, squeegees, and shoveling.
• Performs physical labor associated with cleanup and remediation activities such as sample collection, drum pumping, drum handling, waste bulking, and hand and mechanical demolition.
• Responds to customer spills and emergencies during and after normal business hours.
• Performs inspections on containers, and collection areas, and ensure all is in compliance, labeled and sealed properly.
• Operates light and heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, pumps, pressure washers, generators, electric pallet jacks, forklifts, bobcats, etc.
• Receive, review, prepare, and sign shipping documents.
• Convert shipping documents.
• Audit/ perform checks on employees and procedures.
• Writing work instructions and SOPs
• Track manifest submittal to generators/EPA.
• Conduct waste characterization sampling, including hazard categorization of unknown substances in drums and other containers with field testing.
• Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Civil, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or other Natural Science or equivalent experience/certifications.
• At least 5 years of experience.
• Contribute to various projects in environmental assessment and remediation, hazardous materials management, health and safety oversight, engineering, and natural resource planning and permitting, plus profile, manifest, and coordinate shipping of hazardous and regulated wastes.
• Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, ArcGIS, AutoCAD.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
• Knowledge of Alaska environmental regulations.
• Knowledge of RCRA, CERCLA, OSHA and other federal regulations.
• Experience sampling soil, groundwater, and other media at contaminated sites.
• Experience in hazardous waste and hazardous materials management.
• Experience with environmental remediation technologies.
• Experience on federal projects (HTRW, TERC, AFCEE, etc.).
• Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills required to interact with clients and staff at all levels effectively.

• Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver license and insurable driving record.
• Experience with planning, logistics, and fieldwork in remote locations.
• Completion and maintenance of 40-hour HAZWOPER training required.

Physical And Mental Demands

• Operation of motor vehicles, ATVs/UTVs, and heavy equipment (aircraft, marine craft, etc.).
• Rapid mental and/or muscle coordination.
• Frequent walking, standing, twisting, and turning of the upper body, arms, and legs.
• Crawling, kneeling, stooping, and climbing.
• Visual and auditory requirements: safe distant vision, good near vision, and good hearing.
• Regular use of respirators (½ face and full face) and mandatory use of ANSI-approved safety footwear, safety glasses, and hard hats.
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling:
  • Continuously (over 75% of daily hours): up to 20 lbs.
  • Occasionally to Frequently (15%-50% of daily hours): 21-75 lbs. lifting/carrying; 21-100+ lbs. pushing/pullin g.

Working Conditions
