Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a qualified Ranch Assistant for a well-established Kansas ranch operation. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced cattle person who enjoys hands-on ranch work, operating equipment, and wants the opportunity to become an important long-term part of a family ranch. This is a large, established ranch consisting of approximately 10,000 acres and 750–800 head of commercial cow/calf cattle. The primary focus of this position will be the cattle and day-to-day ranch operation.
Responsibilities will include all aspects of cow/calf production, including feeding, calving, processing, doctoring, herd health, cattle movement, pasture work, and general livestock care. The individual hired needs to be comfortable working cattle, capable of recognizing animal health issues, and willing to take responsibility for getting things done correctly and on time.
In addition to livestock responsibilities, this individual will be involved with hay and forage production. The ranch puts up its own prairie hay utilizing round bales, so experience operating tractors, swathers, rakes, balers, and related hay equipment will be important. Other responsibilities will include equipment servicing and routine maintenance, general mechanical repairs, fencing, facility maintenance, water systems, pasture work, and whatever else needs to be accomplished to keep a large ranch operating efficiently. Welding and fabrication abilities would be valuable.
The employer is particularly interested in finding someone who does not need to be told every little thing that needs to be done. They want a self-motivated individual who can look around the ranch, recognize priorities, communicate with management, and take the initiative to get the work accomplished. Character and dependability are extremely important. The successful candidate must be someone management can trust with livestock, equipment, facilities, and increasing responsibility. They are looking for an individual who takes pride in doing things correctly and who treats the ranch and its assets as if they were their own.
This position has the potential to develop into much more than simply a hired ranch position for the right individual. The employer is looking toward the future and would like to gradually step back from some of the day-to-day responsibilities of the operation. The goal is to find an individual with the drive, ability, and desire to take on increasing responsibility, eventually becoming capable of managing much of the daily ranch operation. They are especially interested in someone who wants to become truly invested in the success of the ranch rather than simply work for a paycheck. For an individual who proves themselves, earns the employer’s trust, and demonstrates a long-term commitment to the operation, there could be an opportunity to develop a deeper involvement in the ranch over time. This is not being presented as a guaranteed ownership or formal succession opportunity, and any future arrangement would need to be developed between the employer and the individual. However, the employer is open-minded about creating an opportunity that gives the right person additional incentive and allows them to have a meaningful stake in what they are helping build and manage.
The ideal person will be someone who wants to put down roots, take ownership of their responsibilities, make sound day-to-day decisions, and eventually become a key part of the operation. For someone with the right attitude, work ethic, management ability, and long-term vision, this could be an excellent opportunity to build a career and potentially become much more involved in the future of the ranch. Housing provided. Compensation will be competitive and based on experience, skill set, stability, and references.
