Job summary

UCAR is seeking a part-time, fixed-term Communications Web Specialist to provide expert consultation to the RAL Communications team on the design, development, and production of complex outreach materials and multimedia tools for the Research Applications Laboratory. This role supports the web refresh and upgrade for the RAL website.

You will collaborate with the RAL team, mentor staff on Drupal development for new content stories, and help plan steps for the web upgrade.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with at least ten years of relevant experience.
• Strong web architecture and web development experience.
• Proficiency in at least one web programming language (PHP/Java/JavaScript/Python/Ruby/Perl).
• Experience with Drupal or Plone CMS.
• Graphic arts and design for print and multimedia.
• Ability to build relational database queries.

About the Role

In this part‑time, term (6months) position, the incumbent provides expert consultation to the RAL Communications team on activities related to the design, development, and production of complex communication and outreach materials and multimedia tools for the Research Applications Laboratory.

This role will work with this group on the web refresh and upgrade.

Key Responsibilities

• Planning and advising on steps for the Web refresh and upgrade.


• Mentor new communications staff on Drupal development for new content stories.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required)

• Demonstrated skill in web architecture/ development methodologies and knowledge of web application architecture; skill in creating client‑side applications.


• Proficiency in at least one web‑oriented programming language, e.g., PHP, Java, Javascript, Python, Ruby, Perl, and relevant operating systems.


• Skill in building and managing the creative content of websites and numerous project web sites within the main RAL website.


• Experience customizing and administering a content management system, such as Drupal or Plone.


• Expert skill in illustrating, drafting, design, layout, electronic prepress and graphic arts techniques to create graphic images for print media, exhibits and/or multimedia.


• Skill in developing database structures and access methods. Ability to build queries for relational databases to return relevant information to an online application.

Education and Experience (Required)

• Bachelor's degree and at least ten years' experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
