Job summary

Springrecruits is seeking a Project Manager – Track for Boston, MA to lead track construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance on Massachusetts projects. You will manage field activities, coordinate with MBTA and DOT authorities, and ensure work complies with FRA and MBTA standards.

The role alternates between office-based project coordination and field supervision of track crews, with travel to sites as needed and weekend availability for OT. Strong communication and leadership are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of railroad track construction experience.

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and contract documents.

• Experience managing multiple subcontractors on active railroad right-of-way.

• Willingness to travel.

Job description

The Project Manager – Track (Boston, MA) is responsible for overseeing track construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance operations within assigned Massachusetts project sites, including work performed in coordination with the MBTA and other Massachusetts Bay area transit authorities. At the early stages of a project, this role will be in an office setting managing construction paperwork, submittals, and regulatory coordination. Once construction is underway, the majority of work will require this position to be in the field directing track crews. This position ensures construction progresses on schedule, contract specifications are adhered to, and all work complies with applicable FRA, MBTA, and Massachusetts DOT requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage field activities across track scope on Massachusetts project sites
• Plan, organize, and direct projects to ensure completion on time and within budget
• Supervise and direct onsite track crews
• Resolve crises and coordinate emergency responses in compliance with MBTA and FRA protocols
• Ensure proper maintenance of onsite equipment for all operations
• Draft, submit, and maintain project reports, RFIs, submittals, and daily field logs
• Complete daily inspections of job site and ensure field work conforms to contract documents
• Coordinate with MBTA, Keolis Commuter Services, and Massachusetts DOT representatives as required
• Availability to work some weekends (OT paid for this)

Track Responsibilities

• Oversee track construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance operations including rail, tie, and ballast work on Massachusetts revenue service lines
• Manage track geometry, alignment, and surface compliance per FRA Track Safety Standards (49 CFR Part 213) and applicable MBTA engineering standards
• Coordinate flagging, track protection, and work zone safety per Massachusetts transit authority rules and GCOR/NORAC operating procedures
• Oversee switch and crossing installation, OTM machine operations, and specialty trackwork in subway, commuter rail, and freight environments
• Monitor and document track inspection results; identify defects and initiate corrective action with the owner’s engineering team
• Manage track outage windows, track access agreements, and timely return-to-service for revenue operations

Qualifications

• Good interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
• Knowledge of track construction required; familiarity with MBTA engineering standards and Massachusetts transit authority operating rules preferred
• Computer knowledge: Familiar with Microsoft Suites

• Working knowledge of AREMA standards and MBTA engineering and operating rules
• Experience managing multiple subcontractors and trade disciplines on active railroad right‑of‑way
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and contract documents
• Minimum 5 years of railroad track construction experience required, with MBTA commuter rail or Massachusetts transit project experience strongly preferred
• Railroad Transit experience required
• 4 year college degree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred
• Or, 5+ years of construction experience with 3+ years of managing/supervising work crews

Work Conditions

• Work in extreme all‑weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow and sleet)
• Able to walk on uneven surfaces over sometimes great distances
• Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery; bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
