Job summary

North American Rail Solutions (NARS) is seeking a Backhoe Operator to perform essential earthwork for railroad construction and maintenance projects. This hourly craft position includes training to operate on-track equipment such as Tamper machines and Ballast Regulators.

The role involves both general construction and precision rail operations, with travel and occasional weekend work expected. Successful candidates will have at least one year of backhoe experience and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• One year of backhoe operation; railroad construction experience preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Pre-employment background check and drug screening required.
• Able to work outdoors in all weather and around heavy equipment.
• Read instructions, plans and diagrams; follow safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate heavy construction equipment safely.
• Maintain equipment and keep it clean; perform daily checks.
• Grade earth and move materials as required.
• Coordinate machine actions with crew using signals.
• Lead a crew and assist with labor on an as-needed basis.
• Identify underground services before starting work.
• Train others to operate the machine when needed.
