Job summary

North American Rail Solutions is seeking a skilled Backhoe Operator to perform essential earthwork for railroad construction and maintenance projects. This hourly craft position includes training to operate on-track equipment such as Tamper machines and Ballast Regulators, with travel and occasional weekend work expected.

You will set up and operate heavy equipment, conduct pre-start checks, and coordinate with crew to meet production goals.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum of one year operating a backhoe; railroad construction experience strongly preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate heavy construction equipment in a safe manner.
• Coordinate machine actions with crew and signals.
• Perform required daily maintenance and inspections, including lubrication.
• Operate equipment to grade earth and move materials.
• Lead a crew, delegate work within scope, and assist crews as needed.
• Study instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements.
• Locate underground services prior to beginning work.
• Grade plan requirements and set grade standards.
