Job summary

The incumbent is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, building and repairing railway freight cars and equipment in accordance with federal and CN regulations. The incumbent is considered a Car Mechanic Apprentice until they qualify as a Journey Car Mechanic.

Training and progression are defined within CN's program. CN offers on-the-job training, a potential 4-year apprenticeship, union protections, and competitive benefits.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be 18 years or older and meet safety requirements.
  • Welding experience is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Ability to work autonomously and handle stress.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect cars and components per regulations and standards.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repair on rail cars and equipment.
  • Repair or install car parts such as valves, bearings, and piping.
  • Use hand and power tools, welding equipment and measuring devices.
  • Record maintenance reports according to procedures.
