Job summary

CN in Battle Creek, MI is seeking a Railway Car Technician (Car Mechanic) with a strong focus on safety to inspect, maintain, build, and repair railway freight cars and equipment in line with Federal and CN standards. The role begins as a Car Mechanic Apprentice and progresses to Journey Car Mechanic.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must meet medical fitness for duty requirements (Safety).
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to work autonomously and manage stress.
• Demonstrates good teamwork and positive interaction with others.
• Good verbal, reading comprehension and writing skills.

Responsibilities

• Inspect cars and components per railroad standards and FRA regulations.
• Perform scheduled, on-request and preventive maintenance and repair of rail cars and structures.
• Repair and install car parts such as compressors, air valves, bearings and piping.
• Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment and measuring instruments.
• Operate transport vehicles including cranes, trucks and shop equipment.
• Prepare inspection and maintenance reports per procedures.
