Job summary

Compass Rail Services LLC is seeking a Railcar Repair Technician to inspect and perform minor repairs on freight railcars while in service or during short dwell times. You will identify defects, document findings, and ensure repairs comply with FRA, AAR, and company standards.

Responsibilities include executing brake adjustments, replacing parts, operating with hand and power tools, and coordinating with yardmasters to minimize downtime while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior mechanical railcar repair or inspection preferred.
• Knowledge of FRA and AAR rules is beneficial.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
• Read and interpret work orders and manuals.
• Strong attention to detail and safety.

Responsibilities

• Perform visual and manual inspections of freight railcars to detect defects.
• Execute minor repairs such as brake shoe replacement, rigging adjustments, and gasket replacements.
• Document defects and determine railcar status per FRA and AAR rules.
• Complete inspection and repair records and defect tags.
• Operate impact wrenches, jacks, grinders, and torches safely.
• Coordinate with yardmasters and dispatchers for car movements and repairs.
• Maintain clean, organized work area and ensure tools/equipment are in good condition.
• Follow company safety rules including PPE and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
