Job summary

Compass Rail is hiring a Railcar Repair Technician to inspect freight railcars and perform minor repairs while in service or during short dwells. You will identify defects, repair as needed, and ensure compliance with FRA, AAR, and company standards.

Responsibilities include documenting inspections, repairing components such as brake shoes and fittings, operating power tools, and coordinating with yard staff. A safety-focused mindset and ability to read manuals are essential for success.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior experience in mechanical railcar repair or inspection preferred.
• Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
• Ability to read and interpret work orders and regulatory standards.
• Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Must be able to pass all required safety and regulatory training.

Responsibilities

• Perform visual and manual inspections of freight railcars to detect defects or wear.
• Execute minor running repairs such as replacing brake shoes and adjusting rigging.
• Identify and document car defects per FRA and AAR rules and determine service status.
• Complete inspection and repair documentation and defect tags.
• Operate tools and equipment including impact wrenches, jacks, grinders, torches.
• Coordinate with yardmasters and dispatchers for car movements and access.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure tools are in working order.
• Follow safety rules and use PPE and Lockout/Tagout when required.
