Job summary

Compass Rail Services LLC in Baytown, TX is seeking a Railcar Repair Technician to inspect freight railcars and perform minor repairs while in service or during short dwell times. You will identify defects, document findings, and ensure compliance with FRA/AAR standards.

The role requires basic mechanical skills, ability to read repair orders, and safe operation of power tools. CDL is a plus, and a valid driver’s license is expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Experience in mechanical railcar repair or inspection is preferred.
• Ability to read work orders and regulatory standards (FRA/AAR).

Responsibilities

• Perform visual and manual inspections of freight railcars to detect defects.
• Execute minor running repairs such as replacing brake shoes, adjusting rigging, repairing safety appliances, and replacing gaskets or fittings.
• Identify and document car defects according to FRA and AAR rules; determine whether railcars can safely remain in service or must be bad ordered.
• Complete inspection reports, repair records, and defect tags.
• Operate tools and equipment including impact wrenches, hydraulic jacks, grinders, and torches.
• Coordinate car movements and repair access with yardmasters and dispatchers.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and ensure tools are in good condition.
