Mendocino Railway’s Skunk Train division seeks a Railbike Mechanic to inspect, maintain, and repair railbikes and related equipment. The role ensures safe, smooth guest experiences and requires hands-on mechanical work in an outdoor, dynamic environment.

The position is part-time with evenings, weekends, and holidays, and involves documenting maintenance and coordinating with operations to prepare units for daily departures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 18 years old.
• Experience repairing bicycles, small engines, or similar mechanical systems.
• Able to use common hand tools for repair and maintenance.
• Familiarity with keeping maintenance records and parts ordering.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily inspections of railbikes and running gear for safe operation.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on railbikes (brakes, chains, pedals, frames).
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues on railbikes and related equipment.
• Maintain tools, parts inventory, and maintenance records.
• Prepare railbikes and gear for guest use and assist with bike staging for departures.
• Communicate safety and maintenance needs with team and guests.
• Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Mendocino Railway is the owner/operator of passenger and freight railroads including the California Western Railroad / Skunk Trainand theRiver Fox Train.The world-famous Skunk Train is a standard gauge passenger railroad that was founded in 1885, and operates 40 miles between Fort Bragg and Willits, in Mendocino County, California.

The Skunk Trainis looking for outgoing individuals with an aptitude for fun and hard work to join the crew as a Railbike Mechanic.Thissafety-minded position will to join our team help ensure our railbike fleet operates safely and efficiently for Railbike Tour guests. This role is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing railbikes and related equipment to ensure a safe and smooth riding experience. This is a full-/part-time position and includes working evenings, weekends, and holidays.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

• Conduct daily inspections of railbikes and running gear to ensure safe operation.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on railbikes, including brakes, chains,
• pedals, frames, and other mechanical components.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues with railbikes and associated
• equipment.
• Maintain and organize tools, parts inventory, and maintenance records.
• Clean and prepare railbikes and gear for guest use.
• Assist operations staff with bike staging, turning bikes around, and preparing units
• for daily departures.
• Respond to maintenance needs during operating hours to keep the fleet running
• smoothly.
• Ensure all equipment meets company safety standards prior to guest use.
• Communicate effectively with guests, crew members and supervisors to ensure seamless service.
• Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 18 years old
• Experience working with and repairing bicycles, small engines, or similar mechanical systems.
• Mechanical aptitude and able to work with small hand tools for repair and maintenance.
• Familiarity with tools, parts ordering, and maintenance documentation and tracking.
• Ability to work independently and manage maintenance tasks efficiently.
• Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve mechanical issues quickly and effectively.
• Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and preventative maintenance.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Pre-employment drug screen (including cannabis) and criminal background check required prior to hiring.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
• Ability to effectively communicate and work with employees, contractors, regulatory representatives, public officials, and members of the public.
• Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Comfortable with technology including using time card systems and Microsoft Office products.
• Must be reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and demeanor.
• Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to lift and move railbikes and equipment as needed.
• Frequent bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and walk on uneven surfaces (train platforms, gravel, etc.).
• Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. safely.
• Ability to bend, reach, stoop, push, pull, and use hand tools.
• Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments and around moving rail equipment (with provided safety training).
• Must be able to perform duties safely while on the tracks and a moving train.
