Job summary

Western Nevada Transload is seeking a Rail Yard Operator for our Reno Lear facility. This hands-on role involves transferring materials between railcars and trucks, and operating yard equipment to keep the yard safe and efficient.

You will follow detailed safety procedures, maintain equipment, and collaborate with drivers and office staff to ensure smooth yard flow. This position requires reliability, teamwork, and safety awareness in an active industrial environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
  • Ability to follow detailed safety procedures and equipment operating requirements.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with OSHA, FRA, rail, transloading, or warehouse work is helpful but not required.

Position Summary

The Rail Yard Operator supports daily transloading and rail-yard operations at the Reno Lear facility. This hands-on role transfers materials between railcars and trucks, operates yard and material-handling equipment, assists with railcar movement and securement, and helps maintain a safe, organized worksite. Success in this position requires reliability, attention to detail, sound safety judgment, and effective teamwork in an active industrial environment.

What You'll Do
  • Unload and transfer materials from railcars using approved equipment and procedures.
  • Inspect, secure, and prepare railcars for movement in accordance with company procedures and applicable requirements.
  • Safely operate yard trucks, railcar movers, forklifts, and other material-handling tools for which you are trained and authorized.
  • Complete required pre- and post-shift equipment inspections; perform routine operator-level maintenance and promptly report defects or safety concerns.
  • Coordinate with drivers, dispatch, coworkers, and office staff to maintain safe and efficient yard flow.
  • Maintain situational awareness and follow all safety rules when working around railcars, vehicles, heavy equipment, and active tracks.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and participate in safety meetings, training, and incident reviews.
  • Maintain work areas through track and yard cleanup, debris removal, de-icing, and snow removal as conditions require.
  • Document shift activity, communicate key updates, and support orderly shift transitions.
  • Assist with other facility and rail-yard duties and help train new team members when assigned.
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
  • Ability to follow detailed safety procedures, instructions, and equipment operating requirements.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced industrial setting.
  • Experience operating forklifts, material movers, yard equipment, or similar machinery is preferred but not required.
  • Prior OSHA, FRA, rail, transloading, warehouse, or industrial experience is helpful but not required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The following describes the essential physical and environmental demands of the role.

  • Regularly stand and walk for extended periods and lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 70 pounds.
  • Climb, balance, bend, stoop, reach, and work at elevated heights, including on railcars, while using required fall-protection equipment.
  • Use hand and power tools, including a sledgehammer, to release railcar components, adjust chocks, and clear compacted material or debris.
  • Work primarily outdoors in changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow.
  • Work safely near moving railcars, trucks, and heavy equipment and in areas that may be noisy, dusty, or uneven.
  • Wear company-required personal protective equipment, which will be provided.
