Job summary

Metra's Engineering Department is seeking a track maintenance supervisor to lead construction and maintenance of track and right-of-way projects across the six-county region. You will ensuring compliance with FRA Track Safety Standards and Metra quality standards, manage schedules, and coordinate crews and equipment.

The role requires six years of track maintenance and three years of supervisory experience, a valid driver's license, and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

• Six years of track maintenance and instruction experience.
• Three years of direct supervisory experience (day-to-day management, tasks, guidance, training, performance, budgeting, hiring).
• Valid driver's license.
• Considerable knowledge of FRA track and maintenance of way standards and policies.
• Considerable knowledge of FRA Track Safety Standards.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment, and cost involved in track maintenance work.
• Good supervisory skills.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Good organizational skills.
• Ability to prepare management reports.
• Ability to conduct track inspections.
• Ability to train staff on work processes and procedures.
• Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit for extended periods.
• Hearing/Visual acuity, color vision.
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
• Willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.
• On-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the construction and maintenance of track and railroad right-of-way projects ensuring compliance with FRA Track Safety Standards, Metra quality standards, and project requirements.
• Perform track and railroad right-of-way inspections using Sperry car, geometry car, and rail grinder to assess rail defects.
• Prioritize track repair needs, prepare maintenance and construction schedules, and schedule maintenance gangs, machine operators, and welders to perform rail work.
• Prepare project cost estimates and bills of material for assigned projects.
• Prepare and submit monthly and annual track inspection reports to the FRA and Metra management.
• Review and resolve labor issues including seniority, overtime allocation, and work rules.
• Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment.
