Job summary

Colonial Group in Baton Rouge, LA is seeking a railcar switcher and locomotive operator to ensure safe and efficient yard movements. Strong communication and safety awareness are essential for coordinating railcar spot, load, and shipment activities.

Preferred experience includes railyard operations or chemical plant loading. The role requires working a rotating 12-hour shift schedule and complying with OSHA safety standards. Training and benefits are provided.

Qualifications

  • Must have a valid, unexpired TWIC and driver's license.
  • Follow OSHA safety standards and be safety-conscious at all times.
  • Comfortable working at heights and near water.
  • 18 years or older and legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Stable work history with good references.
  • Pass a drug screen, physical, and background check.

Responsibilities

  • Examine track lists to determine which railcars to spot, load, and/or ship.
  • Move to designated tracks to separate railcars and ensure space for inbound railcars.
  • Spot inbound railcars for loading/discharge and secure spotted cars.
  • Verify that spotted railcars are secured by applying brakes.
  • Identify loaded vs. preloaded railcars and separate accordingly.
  • Check outbound railcars to ensure proper couplings and connections.
  • Weigh inbound and outbound loads and empties.
  • Ensure weight limits on outbound loads comply with DOT certification.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

This position will be responsible for the safe and efficient railcar switching and locomotive operations. Strong communication skills are required to be able to safely move railcars in, out, and around the facility. Experience in railyard operations and/or chemical plant loading is preferred, but not required.

Schedule:
  • Full Time
  • Rotating 12 hour shift work schedule
Essential Job Duties
  • Examines track list in order to determine which railcars are to be spotted, loaded, and/or shipped
  • Proceeds to the designated track(s) in order to separate railcars to be shipped/loaded, and ensure that there is proper track space available for inbound railcars
  • Separates inbound railcars and spots the railcar for loading/discharge
  • Ensures that all railcars, which have been spotted, are properly secured by means of setting the brake
  • Pulls and separates loaded railcars that will be shipped from those that have been preloaded
  • Checks outbound railcars in order to ensure that all railcars are properly connected
  • Weighs all inbound and outbound loads and empties
  • Ensures that DOT certification for weight on outbound loads is not exceeded
  • Completes any other duties that may be assigned to complete the job.
Job Qualifications – Candidate must:
  • Must currently possess a valid, unexpired TWIC and driver's license.

Physical Requirements – Candidate must be able to
  • Speak, write, read, hear, and have good vision
  • Work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat or extreme cold
  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) without restriction and pass any medical examination associated with the use of PPE
  • Able to lift 30lbs
