Job summary

Shepard Steel Co. seeks an experienced Rail Fabricator to join our miscellaneous metals team in Connecticut. You will fabricate and assemble railings, stair systems, and ornamental rails with a focus on quality and efficiency.

The role requires 7–10+ years in metals fabrication, strong MIG/TIG welding skills, and the ability to read shop drawings and specifications. You will work on-site and contribute to safety, craftsmanship, and timely delivery.

Qualifications

• 7–10+ years in miscellaneous metals fabrication, focused on railings
• Ability to fabricate complex and custom railing systems independently
• Strong welding knowledge: MIG/TIG; stainless/aluminum experience preferred
• Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and specifications
• Familiarity with industry standards and codes for railing systems
• High attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship

Responsibilities

• Fabricate and assemble railings including stairs, guardrails, handrails, ornamental rails
• Interpret drawings, field measurements, and specs for accurate fabrication
• Perform layout, cutting, fitting, welding, finishing of metals (steel, stainless, aluminum)
• Ensure work meets quality standards and project specs
• Collaborate with shop supervisors, project managers, and detailers to resolve fabrication challenges
• Maintain production schedules and communicate delays or issues
• Operate shop equipment safely (saws, welders, grinders)
• Assist with training and mentoring less experienced fabricators
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow safety protocols

• Fabricate and assemble railings including stairs, guardrails, handrails, ornamental rails, etc.


• Interpret shop drawings, field measurements, and specifications to ensure accurate fabrication


• Perform layout, cutting, fitting, welding, and finishing of various metals (steel, stainless, aluminum)


• Ensure all work meets quality standards and project specifications


• Collaborate with shop supervisors, project managers, and detailers to resolve fabrication challenges

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED (trade school preferred but not required)


• Ability to lift up to 70 lbs and perform physical shop work (standing, bending, lifting)


• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with minimal supervision


• Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license


• Ability to work overtime as needed to meet deadlines


• Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check
