Job summary

Interstate Waste Services, Inc. in Kentucky is seeking an overnight rail yard operator for Monday to Friday 7:30pm–6:00am. You will perform locomotive inspections, operate trains, and switch cars in the rail yard to meet production needs.

Ideal candidates are at least 18, have a high school diploma or GED, can lift 50 pounds, and possess a minimum of 1 year in rail engineering; outdoor work under varying weather is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of rail engineering experience.
• Ability to utilize technology in the form of a tablet and/or computer.
• High school diploma or GED; higher education is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre and post trip inspections on locomotives to ensure proper working condition.
• Operate locomotive in accordance with company and FRA policies.
• Interpret signals and relay movements to ensure safe operations of trains.
• Safely switch cars in the rail yard to meet production needs.
• Inspect train and equipment in movement and at rest.
• Assist with other projects and duties as assigned.
• Ensure compliance with train orders, signals, and FRA regulations.
• Monitor track conditions and report issues.
• Follow OSHA safety standards and wear required PPE.

• Conduct pre and post trip inspections on locomotives to ensure the unit is in proper working condition each day.
• Operate locomotive in accordance with company and FRA policies.
• Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train.
• Safely and efficiently switch cars through the railyard to meet the needs of production.
• Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary
• Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
• Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
• Monitor track conditions and report any issues
• Follow OSHA safety standards and wear required PPE

Requirements and Qualifications:

• Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
• Ability to utilize technology in the form of a tablet and/or computer
• High school/GED education completed, higher education is a plus
• Must be able to lift/push/pull at least 50 pounds
• Minimum 1 year of rail engineering and experience
• Able to work in an outdoor environment on a constant basis while being exposed to variable weather conditions, temperatures, chemicals, dust, fumes, smells, and loud noises.
