Job summary

HDR is seeking a rail engineering-oriented candidate to join our team in the Norfolk area. You will support planning, design, construction and delivery of rail infrastructure projects, and assist with calculations, drawings, reports, and cost estimates.

You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, gain exposure to tracks, facilities, civil infrastructure and environmental services, and participate in site visits to build hands-on expertise in railroad projects.

Qualifications

• EIT certification or plans to pursue licensure.
• Internship, co-op, field or project exposure in engineering/transportation.
• Interest in freight rail, transit, industrial or transportation infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Support the planning, design, construction and delivery of rail infrastructure projects.
• Assist with technical deliverables: calculations, drawings, specs, reports, exhibits and cost estimates.
• Contribute to projects involving track, facilities, structures, civil infrastructure, environmental services, construction field services, and advisory support.
• Participate in site visits, field assessments, inspections, and project walkthroughs.
• Use engineering tools to support project development and delivery.
• Research and apply codes, standards, regulations and client requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, advisory, technology and construction disciplines.
• Work with experienced engineers, project managers and technical specialists to develop skills.
• Travel periodically for project meetings and field assignments.

What You’ll Have the Opportunity to:

• Support the planning, design, construction and delivery of rail infrastructure projects.

• Utilize engineering, design and analytical tools to support project development and delivery.
• Research and apply applicable codes, standards, regulations and client requirements.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, advisory, technology and construction disciplines.
• Work alongside experienced engineers, project managers and technical specialists to develop your technical and professional skills.
• Travel periodically for project meetings, field assignments, client-related activities and construction support.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or plans to pursue professional licensure.
• Successful completion of, or plans to take, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
• Internship, co-op, research, field or project experience related to engineering, transportation, construction or infrastructure.
• Experience with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, MicroStation, Revit, GIS, structural analysis software, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
• Construction inspection, field assessment or surveying experience.
• Interest in freight rail, transit, industrial, port or transportation infrastructure projects.

• Familiarity with railroad design, bridge structures, rail facilities, construction management or related disciplines.
