Job summary

HDR Rail is seeking an Engineering in Training (EIT) to join our team in a collaborative, owner-employee culture. You will work with seasoned engineers on rail projects serving Class I, short lines, and municipal clients, gaining hands-on experience across design, fieldwork, analytics and advisory services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of MicroStation and/or AutoCAD.
  • MS Office Applications experience.
  • Strong interest in railroad design.

Responsibilities

  • Support the planning, design, construction and delivery of rail infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with technical deliverables, including calculations, drawings, specifications, reports and exhibits.
  • Contribute to projects involving track, facilities, structures, civil infrastructure, environmental services, construction field services and advisory support.
  • Participate in site visits, field assessments and project walkthroughs.
  • Utilize engineering and analytical tools to support project development and delivery.
  • Research and apply applicable codes, standards and client requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, advisory, technology and construction.
  • Work with experienced engineers and project managers to build your technical skills.
  • Travel periodically for project meetings and field assignments.

What You’ll Have the Opportunity to:
  • Support the planning, design, construction and delivery of rail infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with technical deliverables, including calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, exhibits and cost estimates.
  • Contribute to a variety of projects involving track, facilities, structures, civil infrastructure, environmental services, construction field services, and advisory support.
  • Participate in site visits, field assessments, inspections, and project walkthroughs.
  • Utilize engineering, design and analytical tools to support project development and delivery.
  • Research and apply applicable codes, standards, regulations and client requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, advisory, technology and construction disciplines.
  • Work alongside experienced engineers, project managers and technical specialists to develop your technical and professional skills.
  • Travel periodically for project meetings, field assignments, client-related activities and construction support.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or plans to pursue professional licensure.
  • Successful completion of, or plans to take, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
  • Internship, co-op, research, field or project experience related to engineering, transportation, construction or infrastructure.
  • Experience with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, MicroStation, Revit, GIS, structural analysis software, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
  • Construction inspection, field assessment or surveying experience.
  • Interest in freight rail, transit, industrial, port or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with railroad design, bridge structures, rail facilities, construction management or related disciplines.
