Job summary

The Shelly Company, a CRH company, seeks a Rail Crewperson for a hands-on labor role in the rail yard. You will unload products from railcars, assist the foreperson, and perform general labor, including shoveling and basic maintenance.

Training is provided; prior rail or aggregate experience is a plus but not required. You may operate heavy equipment under supervision, and you must follow OSHA/MSHA safety rules.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; or 1–3 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic math skills for units of money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems in standard situations.

Responsibilities

  • Unloading product from railcars at company facilities.
  • Assist the plant foreperson with the daily operations and upkeep of the plant.
  • General labor, shoveling, and equipment maintenance; assist foreperson and crew as needed.
  • May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.
  • Day-to-day work may include safe operation of heavy equipment including Frontend Loader and skid steer loader.
  • Detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.
  • Follow directions and adhere to OSHA & MSHA regulations.

Position Overview

This is a hands‑on laborer role supporting a rail yard crew with a variety of physically demanding tasks. Duties include shoveling, sweeping, handling materials, using hand tools, and assisting with general site upkeep. Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to do routine paperwork.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
