Job summary

UNC Health Care System is seeking a student radiologic technologist to support CT imaging procedures at the UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. You will learn to prepare patients, position for scans, and assist radiologists while maintaining safety and quality under supervision.

The role requires enrollment in an AMA approved radiologic technology program or CT tech certification course. This per diem position offers on-site work with variable hours and hands-on clinical exposure.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate or GED required; must be attending AMA approved school of radiologic technology; must be in CT Tech certification course.

• Assists qualified radiologic technologists in CT imaging procedures and quality exams.

Summary:
Performs radiological procedures at technical level that requires direct supervision. Must be considered a second level student by clinical supervisor.

• Support qualified radiologic technologists in the preparation and performance of CT imaging procedures.
• Learn how to prepare patients for CT exams, including obtaining history relevant to the imaging procedure.
  • Practice clear communication about the procedure, breath‑hold instructions, and post‑procedure care.
  • Review contraindications for contrast agents.
  • Observe the administration of iodinated IV contrast under supervision.
  • Learn to recognize signs of contrast reactions and emergency response protocols.
• Observe and participate in patient positioning specific to CT protocols (e.g., head, chest, abdomen, spine).

• Gain exposure to operating multi‑slice CT scanners, performing quality control checks, and preparing equipment.
• Understand the differences in scan acquisition parameters and reconstruction techniques.

• Observe image reconstruction and post‑processing techniques (e.g., MPR, 3D rendering).

• Assist with patient throughput.

Responsibilities

• Prepares patient for procedure: identify patient using two identifiers and two sources; documents pregnancy according to procedure; identifies common clinical indications for imaging studies and notes discrepancies; correctly documents and maintains patient care records ensuring order is correct.
• Produces diagnostic quality exams according to departmental competency and college competency: set technical factors, position patient to achieve optimal images; complete quality exams with efficiency and accuracy; maintain competency when performing surgical imaging exams under strict sterile procedure; perform quality diagnostic exams with portable machine in ER and floor units; recognize limitations of knowledge for student radiographer; avoid repeat or unnecessary errors.
• Maintains safety including radiation safety of the patient and the technologist: properly shields patient; minimize repeats; demonstrate compliance with ALARA principles; demonstrate understanding and compliance with NPSG’s; maintain safety integrity per room assignment; prepared for emergencies and use correct procedures to maximize safety and minimize risks; detect hazardous situations and take action to correct it or report it; report incidents or accidents promptly; demonstrate good infection control practices.
• Assists radiologist in performing fluoroscopy procedures: set up room properly for each exam including proper supplies.
• Maintains level of competency through educational requirements: participate in in‑service education classes; maintain "in good standing" status under radiology program coordinator; maintain knowledge of department meetings; meet deadlines for review of educational policies, modules, meetings, etc.; stay informed of departmental policy changes.
• Identify and address the needs of different patient age groups (pediatric, adolescent, geriatric) and demonstrate ability to effectively communicate with these patients; recognize technical limitations and communicate that information promptly to the supervising tech or radiology physician.
