Major Responsibilities
- May perform as a Charge role with the ability to supervise others and effectively run department workflow during assigned shift.
- Function as preceptor for new hires as well as radiology students, training others independently in multiple settings of the department, e.g., diagnostic x‑ray and fluoroscopy.
- Operate advanced digital and computed radiographic equipment including portables, C‑arms, O‑arms, and fluoroscopy units in multiple settings.
- Assist radiologists with fluoroscopic procedures, including advanced exams such as GI procedures and mini special exams; prepare radiographic/fluoroscopic rooms for procedures and maintain equipment and supplies for fluoroscopy case load; schedule mini special exams such as myelograms and cystograms.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot diagnostic/fluoroscopic CR and DR equipment; identify and report issues and submit service requests.
- Operate portable radiographic equipment and fluoroscopic C‑arms in the OR and intensive care units (MICU, SICU, PICU).
- Operate the O‑arm independently.
- Demonstrate competence in two of the following advanced training procedures: OR19 (Hybrid Room), Stealth Navigation, DEXA training and certification, EOS training and proficiency, and pediatric specialized exams such as intussusception and VCUGs.* Exception: Dedicated overnight and pediatric team members must maintain competency in one of the mentioned procedures.
- Participate in process or quality improvement projects, including outpatient engagement initiatives, throughput and ED turnaround time improvements, high reliability unit and safety‑focused initiatives, and other projects aimed at improving workflow, staff education, or department processes.
- Operate x‑ray equipment to produce radiographs of designated portions of the body as specified by a physician.
- Maneuver portable radiographic equipment in patient care areas and in surgery as required.
- Operate all components, including all locking devices on radiographic, fluoroscopic equipment and C‑arms.
- Perform radiographic procedures on Level I trauma patients to expedite immediate care of critically ill patients.
- Determine appropriate exposure factors and position patients using immobilization devices when appropriate to ensure optimum film quality.
- Verify patient and procedure prior to starting exam.
- Prepare patients for exam, adhere to isolation/sterile techniques and radiation safety procedures.
- Adhere to department standards of radiographic quality, review radiographs to ensure optimum quality, report environmental/equipment problems to appropriate resource personnel, perform required computer functions for RIS/HIS systems, and label all radiographs appropriately following the department’s established criteria and standards.
- Maintain professionalism, cooperation, and positive interaction with co‑workers, physicians, patients, and families.
- Participate in assessment of own learning needs and actively seek opportunities for professional growth.
- Attend in‑services to ensure knowledge of current departmental and technical procedures; attend CPR classes to maintain re‑certification and maintain appropriate state license and national board certification.
- Maintain supplies needed to ensure adequate level for quality patient care: ensure cleanliness of equipment and work area, maintain inventory of supplies in work area, and restock as necessary.
- Use universal precautions in daily performance of procedures.
- Collaborate with patients and families to provide appropriate psychosocial interventions based on age and developmental status; reassure children and aging patients; assist with patient/family participation in post‑procedural care for all age groups and provide resource information as directed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of Radiology Technology, or certificate or associate degree in Radiology Technology.
- Previous experience: at least 3 years as a radiographer, or 1 year experience at ALGH as a radiographer.
- Good communication skills.
- Good understanding of RIS, working knowledge of Digital Imaging System, and basic computer skills.
- Good understanding of more advanced radiographic procedures.
- Ability to serve as a resource to other associates.
- ARRT registered or registry eligible.
- IDNS licensed.
- Current CPR certification.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and emergency call backs to accommodate staffing needs.
- May be exposed to radiation during procedures.
- May be required to sit or stand for long periods, lift and move patients, and be exposed to hazardous materials and infectious disease; required to participate in annual emergency drills.
- Required to maintain current CPR certification.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; for patient lifts over 35 pounds or when the patient is unable to assist, patient handling equipment is expected to be used with at least one other associate, when available.
