Brown University Health is seeking a part-time Tech Assistant to support patient care in the imaging department. The role involves transporting patients, assisting with procedures, and ensuring safety and quality standards. Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma, relevant training, and strong communication skills. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Manager Medical Imaging or designee and in accordance with established policies and procedures, transports patients requiring radiographic procedures. Works directly with imaging technologists and radiologists to facilitate high-quality imaging services. Exercises critical thinking within a formalized training program to prioritize workload and patient management. Collaborates with Diagnostic Imaging Technologists and others to recommend operational improvements.
Responsibilities:
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides patient and family-centered care aligned with Brown University Health's mission, considering developmental stages and cultural patterns across all age groups. Performs all functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards per hospital and department policies.
Prepares rooms, equipment, and supplies for diagnostic imaging. Positions kits or trays to facilitate procedures. Prepares contrast media as needed, following formal training and department procedures.
Assists technologists and radiologists during procedures, working with equipment within the scope of formal training to complete examinations.
Demonstrates competency in inserting, monitoring, and removing IV catheters, adhering to infection control standards.
Helps manage patients during procedures, observing radiation safety rules. Remains in the room during fluoroscopy and minor interventional procedures to assist radiologists. Assists with packaging specimens, labeling, and room/equipment cleaning post-procedure.
Works with medical documents and information, supporting department and hospital policies, reviewing medical charts, and respecting patient privacy.
Processes information in PACS, LifeChart, and other applications, reviewing exam worklists for completeness and patient readiness, supporting department operations during downtime.
Greets and escorts patients, provides orientation, explains procedures, and responds to questions. Identifies and assists patients prior to procedures, following patient identification policies.
Assists with patient transport, obtaining approval from supervisors, and collaborating with nursing and department staff to ensure efficiency. Recommends process improvements.
Assists technologists with portable radiography and patient positioning, preparing patients for imaging, and moving patients to/from imaging tables.
Secures transport equipment and supplies, cleans and prepares equipment before and after use.
Provides and reviews patient screening forms and information sheets. Offers transport services as needed, observes patients, reports adverse reactions, and maintains room cleanliness.
Maintains stock levels, performs inventory, and orders supplies. Verifies received materials, checks for damages, and manages storage per protocols.
Interacts with vendors and hospital personnel regarding supplies and equipment maintenance. Reports repair needs per hospital policy.
Supports patient care devices, assists with toileting and hygiene, and performs routine cleaning and safety practices.
Adheres to ALARA radiation safety principles, uses personal dosimeters, and performs other duties like clerical tasks, training, and compliance with hospital training requirements.
Other duties include assisting with documentation, data entry, and interdepartmental deliveries.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a Tech Assistant training program or relevant experience required. Basic Life Support certification needed within six months. Skills include numerical and analytical abilities, manual dexterity, understanding of radiation safety, age-specific patient care, effective communication, and critical thinking.
EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a Tech Assistant training program or previous relevant experience. Enrollment in a healthcare track is acceptable if training isn't available.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Exposure to ionizing radiation and contagious diseases, with safety precautions. Requires standing, walking, lifting, and handling equipment. May involve handling hazardous materials.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within departmental policies, consulting supervisors for complex issues.
