Job summary

Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, TN seeks a Radiological Control Technician to monitor personnel and areas, select monitoring devices, and ensure exposure control. You will support field operations, conduct surveys, and assist in training RCTs as needed.

What You'll Do

• Under general supervision, performs monitoring of personnel, work areas, and items leaving radiological areas for the control of exposures from internal and external sources.
• When directed, assumes responsibility for assigned area in the absence of the Radiological Control Technician (RCT) Lead.
• Frequently interacts with Operations personnel of area assigned; i.e., initial pre-shift communication to go over activities scheduled for the day/week.
• Determines appropriate personnel monitoring devices, anti-contamination clothing (including respiratory protection), and stay times for radiological workers working with sources of radiation.
• Observes radiological work processes and performs Field Observations and area contamination and radiation surveys from area assigned.
• When directed, assist in the training of less experienced RCTs.
• Actively participates in the planning for work overage.
• Participate as an Emergency Response Organization RADCON team member.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Requires a DOE RCT standardized CORE training certification. Applicants/upload a copy of your DOE RCT Core Certification.
• High school diploma or GED plus 2 years of Radiological Protection experience OR 4 years of radiography/radiology experience OR associate's degree in a science I technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography/Radiology experience OR bachelor's degree in a science I technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography/Radiology experience OR master's degree in a science I technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography/Radiology experience OR PHD in a science/ technical field plus 2 years of Radiological Protection/Radiography/Radiology experience.
• Must be able to perform mathematical computations and conversions to express sampling & monitoring results in proper units and terms.
• Experience required to utilize general databases and Microsoft Office.
• Must understand the basic nature of the types of radiation.
• Must be knowledgeable and trained in principles, methods, and mechanics of monitoring and sampling of radiological hazards.
• Requires the ability to recognize and characterize problems related to standards and limits, plan investigative action, and define corrective measures.
• In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., High School diploma; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
