Job description


FLEXSTAFF is seeking a Nuclear Medicine Technologist for our client located in Queens.


Administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients under the supervision of a physician for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Performs diagnostic and nuclear imaging by utilizing appropriate imaging technology and established protocol. Follows established radiology protocols and standards to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff, maximize imaging quality and deliver efficient and effective nuclear medicine services. Complies with all applicable NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, federal, state, and local regulations governing the practice of Nuclear Medicine.



Assignment Level I
Under supervision, performs various nuclear medicine procedures and technical activities in the delivery of nuclear medicine services. The following are essential duties for Assignment Level I:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Prepares patients for nuclear medicine procedures requested by the Clinician; arranges for proper protection of patients, the public and staff from infectious diseases/materials. 2. Receives patients and explains nuclear medicine procedures; instructs patients on the procedure to obtain optimal imaging results; answers all related questions and responds to patient's needs or concerns, as required.
3. Performs nuclear medicine imaging procedures on patients by safely utilizing appropriate nuclear medicine equipment.
4. Operates imaging equipment (scintillation cameras, portable nuclear medicine cameras) and related accessories (e.g., multi-format imaging devices, xenon apparatus, computers) for nuclear medicine procedures and studies.
5. As per the exam request, assists patients to position appropriately to acquire proper images. Controls equipment, in accordance with prescribed procedures to produce optimal diagnostic quality of scans.
6. Performs quality control (QC) tests on nuclear medicine equipment based on the frequency established by the department and reports defects or deficiencies for proper calibration and or repair.
7. Prepares appropriate dosages of radiopharmaceutical in preparation for diagnostic procedures; assays radiopharmaceutical dosages administered via intravenous or oral to patients.
8. Receives and checks all radionuclide shipments for contamination according to radiation safety regulations, and performs various tasks associated with receiving, processing, distributing and storing radioactive materials.
9. Disposes of radioactivity and contamination materials, in accordance with departmental, local, state and federal regulations, maintaining records of storage as well as disposal of radioactive waste.
10. Using appropriate detectors or other devices, monitors personnel, work areas and patient rooms, where applicable, to ensure that levels of radiation do not exceed those levels defined in health care setting and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and/or other appropriate regulations. Promptly reports all excessive radiation exposure to the Radiation Safety Officer.
11. Effectively uses electronic medical records (EMR) to document patient encounters and access pertinent patient data and imaging results.
12. Participates in departmental meetings, internal/external quality assurance/performance improvement (QA/PI) activities and training, as required.
13. Maintains regular contact with physicians and other health care personnel regarding the nature, scheduling or results of procedures performed within the Nuclear Medicine department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (continued)
14. Plans, schedules and coordinates the day-to-day activities of the Nuclear Medicine department to ensure continuous flow of work.
15. Assists in the development of new tests by performing comparison studies and clinical trials. Assists to implement these new procedures.
16. Assists in the conduct of specialized tests and studies either in vivo or in vitro.
17. Assists in the development of quality control procedures and quality assurance. Instructs other technical personnel on technical aspects of their routine use.
18. Assists in the development of computer applications in Nuclear Medicine in order to more effectively collect, analyze, and enhance data from nuclear medicine procedures.



Assignment Level II
Under direction, performs advanced nuclear medicine work and serves as a resource to appropriate staff in the performance of nuclear medicine procedures. May perform major duties of Assignment Level I and, also performs the following:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides direction to appropriate technical staff and guides staff in the performance of nuclear medicine techniques; serves as a resource in various aspects of advanced nuclear medicine practice.
2. Recommends area assignment of personnel to coordinate activities within the department with other activities and services and represents the department in interdepartmental operations and meetings.
3. Conducts research and participates in special projects involving evaluation of equipment and delivery of nuclear medicine services.



Assignment Level III
Under direction, performs procedures using radionuclides by operating more advanced nuclear medicine instruments and equipment, and serves as a resource to appropriate staff in the performance of nuclear medicine procedures. May perform major duties of Assignment Levels I and II and, also performs the following:
1. Performs complex nuclear medicine examinations, including all procedures using radionuclides by operating more advanced nuclear medicine instruments and equipment (e.g., Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography (PET-CT) and Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT) to assist medical staff in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.



Qualification Requirements:
For Appointment to Assignment Level I
1. Valid temporary permit to practice as a Radiologic Technologist, specializing in Nuclear Medicine, issued by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
For Appointment to Assignment Level II
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist, specializing in Nuclear Medicine issued by the NYSDOH.
For Appointment to Assignment Level III
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist, specializing in Nuclear Medicine issued by the NYSDOH; and
2. Certification in Computed Tomography (CT) issued by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
