Job description

Job Summary

Operates radiologic equipment to produce radiographs (X‑rays) for diagnostic purposes under the direction of a radiologist: positions the patient on the examining table, adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified body areas, explains procedures to reduce patient anxieties, moves X‑ray equipment into the specified position, and adjusts equipment controls to set exposure factors based on radiographic exposure techniques and protocols. Practices radiation protection techniques, using beam‑restrictive devices, patient shielding, and applicable exposure factors to minimize radiation to patient and staff. May operate mobile X‑ray equipment in the operating room, emergency room, or at the patient’s bedside.

Environmental Demands: Radiation exposure hazards controlled. Exposure to infection and disease.

Essential Physical and Cognitive Demands: On feet most of the day. Lifting and positioning of patients. Moving heavy mobile equipment. Manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination required.

Job Specific Competencies
  1. Demonstrate competency in all exams performed (positioning, proper labeling, patient identification, left/right markers, etc.).
  2. Competent and able to critique all images in PACS and repeat images as necessary while maintaining an acceptable repeat/reject rate; operates equipment for the transfer of images.
  3. Prepare the X‑ray room prior to the first patient (room stocked with needed equipment and supplies) and keep the room and work area neat and clean at all times.
  4. Instruct patient in layman terms to relieve anxiety and prepare for radiologic examinations.
  5. Monitor patient condition by directly observing the patient during the examination and recognizing and reporting abnormal changes; assess patient pain interfering with imaging procedure and make appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  6. Determine the most suitable anatomical posture and positions, shielding the patient accordingly; adhere to all radiation safety requirements, ALARA.
  7. Interact professionally with patient/family/co‑workers; possess the ability to work in a high‑stress area and maintain a positive attitude.
  8. Complete all work or provide a proper hand‑off before clocking out and leaving.
  9. Perform duties according to ARRT standards, ACR standards, and Montefiore Nyack Hospital protocols.
  10. Set up room, sterile trays, prep patient, and set up sterile field as needed.
  11. Responsible for safe handling of equipment.
  12. Complete IV contrast screening forms and metformin patient education form when required.
  13. Wear identification while on duty; use computerized punch‑time system correctly.
  14. Attend departmental in‑services and Mega Education Day as scheduled.
  15. Attend at least four monthly department meetings, read and sign off on meeting minutes when not in attendance.
  16. Actively participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  17. Must be able to rotate hospital holidays; name will be placed on mandation rotation list to cover open shifts.
  18. Communicate the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital.
  19. Document on addendum age‑specific competency.

    • Utilizes charge process for supplies/equipment and appropriate billing information including patient history.
  • D. PROJECTS/ASSIGNMENTS:
    • Completes projects/assignments within projected time frames and expectations.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree required.
  • General radiographic experience; new graduates may be considered.
  • ARRT — American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Upon hire, required: RADIOL licensed radiologist — New York State Dept. of Health.
  • Upon hire, required: BLS — American Heart Association within 90 days.
