Job summary

City and County of Honolulu is seeking a skilled radio communications technician to install, maintain, and repair radio systems for multiple City departments. The role includes troubleshooting diverse electronic equipment, supporting system design and upgrades, and delivering training on proper operation and FCC compliance.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma, a two-year electronics program, and at least three years of related experience.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to high school diploma and completion of a two-year electronics program.
  • Three (3) years of technical work experience in radio communications.
  • Valid drivers license (Type 3) required prior to appointment.
  • FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License desirable; attach copy if possessed.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair radio systems for City departments.
  • Troubleshoot and service electronic equipment incl. radios, intercoms, and projectors.
  • Support system design and upgrades; assist with circuit design and custom components.
  • Provide technical support and training on equipment operation and FCC compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

What You'll Do:
  • Install, maintain, and repair radio communication systems including base stations, repeaters, mobile and portable radios, dispatch equipment, antennas, and transmission line systems used by City departments.

  • Troubleshoot and service electronic equipment, including trucking radios, sound distribution systems, fire station intercoms, and other department electronics such as projectors and testing instruments.

  • Support system design and upgrades by assisting with circuit design, modifying existing systems, and building custom components for specialized radio equipment installations.

  • Provide technical support and training by instructing radio users on proper equipment operation, ensuring compliance with FCC regulations, and assisting with maintenance of shop tools, equipment, and vehicles.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities of the position.

Salary

Salary for the Honolulu Fire Department: $4,933 per month (SR-19)

Salary for the Honolulu Police Department: $4,933 - $6,003 per month (SR-19)

Actual salary will be commensurate with applicable experience, pending approval.

Education Requirement

Equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of a two-year program in electronics technology from an accredited community college or technical school.

Experience Requirement

License Requirement

Possession of a valid Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator License is desirable.
