Job summary

The City of Worcester is seeking a Radio System Technician within the Worcester Fire Department. You will manage, maintain, repair, and improve the City’s public emergency alarm reporting system, station alerting systems, and fire alarm master boxes, while inspecting AES receivers and bi-directional amplifiers.

You will also train Fire Prevention and Dispatch personnel, coordinate with engineers and contractors, and perform field work onsite. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Training in electronics, telecommunications, electrical/electronic engineering technology or equivalent.
  • Two years of hands-on experience installing and maintaining fire alarm/low-voltage systems under a licensed technician or journeyman.
  • Valid driver’s license and basic WAN/LAN familiarity.

Responsibilities

  • Read, review, and analyze documents related to responsibilities.
  • Bridge communication gaps between technical and non-technical staff.
  • Manage project scheduling and technology planning.
  • Coordinate inspections with engineers, architects, electrical contractors, vendors, and facility representatives.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the public emergency alarm reporting system and station alerting systems.
  • Inspect and commission AES subscriber units and bi-directional amplifiers.
  • Provide ongoing training for Fire Prevention and Dispatch personnel on AES equipment.
  • Attend trainings to maintain certifications and credentials.
  • Review plans and inspect fire alarm systems, AES units, and BDA installations.

Job description

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Radio System Technician within the Worcester Fire Department. Under the direction of the District Chief of Fire Prevention, the Radio System Technician is responsible for the management, maintenance, repair, and improvement of the City’s public emergency alarm reporting system, fire station alerting systems, fire alarm master boxes, and inspect and approve bi-directional amplifiers. This position will also provide ongoing training for Fire Prevention and Dispatch personnel on the use of receiving and reporting equipment.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:
  • Read, review, and analyze documents pertaining to responsibilities
  • Liaise and bridge communication gaps between technical and non-technical staff
  • Manage project scheduling and technology planning
  • Communicate system installation and operation requirements to and coordinate inspections with fire protection engineers, architects, electrical contractors, vendors, and facility representatives
  • Manage repairs and perform maintenance on WFD station alerting system
  • Inspect and commission subscriber units to the public emergency alarm reporting system
  • Maintain and provide information to resolve faults with the public emergency alarm reporting system to responsible parties
  • Provide ongoing training for Fire Prevention and Dispatch personnel on the use of AES receivers and standard operating procedures for the use of AES receiving and reporting equipment
  • Attend trainings and seminars to maintain necessary certifications, licenses, and credentials
  • Review plans and inspect installations of fire alarm systems, AES subscriber units, and bi-directional amplifiers
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of mechanical tools, specific meters, and department-issued technology
  • Exhibit strong judgment, communication skills, including written and interpersonal
  • Technically skilled in the installation and maintenance of fire alarm/low-voltage systems
  • Excellent organization, problem solving, and data processing/analytical skills
  • Flexibility to work outside normal business hours and work outside of an office setting
  • Ability to plan and execute work independently
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours to support field inspections, outages, and station alerting maintenance
  • Knowledge of WAN/LAN
  • Skilled in delivering training programs
  • Ability to read/interpret plans, wiring diagrams, and specifications and communicate requirements to engineers, contractors, and facility representatives
  • Ability to distinguish colors
  • Perform significant field work on construction sites, with the need to climb ladders and work in tight spaces.
  • Onsite attendance is required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Training in electronics, telecommunications, electrical/electronic engineering technology, or equivalent military/technical training
  • Two (2) years of hands-on experience installing, commissioning, inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire alarm/low-voltage systems under a licensed systems technician or journeyman
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic WAN/LAN familiarit
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience installing, commissioning, inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire alarm/low-voltage systems under a licensed systems technician or journeyman
  • Massachusetts Systems Technician – Class D (SD) License
  • Familiarity with 780 CMR Massachusetts State Building Code applications as they pertain to fire alarm and in-building emergency responder radio coverage (ERCES/BDA) plan review and testing
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70, NFPA 72, and NFPA 1221
FULL SALARY RANGE:

$66,475 - $87,012 annually, full-time, exempt, with an excellent benefits package
