Radiation Therapy Technologists perform a wide variety of technical therapeutic procedures by applying ionizing radiation from radioactive materials or generators to treat benign or malignant diseases of the body. They also perform other related duties as assigned.
Typically, Radiation Therapy Technologists confer with Radiation Oncologists and work closely with Dosimetrists to discuss treatment plans and the type of simulator films required. They place reference markings on patients' bodies, review treatment procedures to ensure understanding, and advise on appropriate dietary and skin care procedures. They position patients for various therapy types, provide immobilization devices, set up equipment according to treatment plans, monitor patients for reactions, and record dosage values.
Additional responsibilities include calculating prescribed radiation dosages, assisting with applicator preparations for implants, operating simulation and radiographic equipment, evaluating film quality, performing minor equipment adjustments, ordering supplies, and evaluating equipment for modifications or replacements. Under supervision, Technologists perform duties as outlined in the series concept, functioning as part of a team and independently operating equipment as needed.
Incumbents work with a Senior Radiation Therapy Technologist in patient treatment and operate orthovoltage equipment independently, including taking radiographic films for simulation.
Annual Full Pay Range: $118,181 - $146,933 (prorated if less than 100% appointment).
Hourly Range: $56.60 - $70.37.
